Sektor 304-Soul Cleansing-CD (Malignant Records)

Einsturzende Neubauten, Swans & Non come to mind the second this CD started to play with a healthy does of bands like Control and SkinCrime as well. There is a oppressive percussive element going on with a vocal assault going on mix with noise and loops that would match Slogun in thier anger and angst. I also have the same feeling I got listening to bands like Millita and Inade as I get with Sektor 304 this is not a pleasant journey nor is it suppose to be. There is a darkness and doom sound to Soul Cleansing that is almost in the Earliest of Swans releases. Malignant has made a shift in sound and style with Sektor 304 but still staying in a very Industrial laced background I would say this is the most rock based release Ive heard from the label in years. I dont remember guitars and drums so used in a metallic way before. I love the overall live sound of the release too. I sounds like Sektor 304 are speaking to the masses and it works amazingly well. A must own release...

SEKTOR 304 Soul Cleansing CD (Malignant) 11.98

"The latest offering from Malignant Records is one of the heavier releases (if not the heaviest) that the label has put out, and it's a definite diversion from the more isolationist/dark ambient albums that I've been picking up from them...alot of the recent albums on Malignant have generally focused on heavily textured dark ambience that usually have some elements of percussive heaviness going on occasionally, but this Portugese band have delivered a crushing disc that veers awfully close to Godflesh-levels of heaviness at times. Sektor 304 have dropped a monster slab of apocalyptic industrial crush with Soul Cleansing, delivering a sound that combines super-heavy mechanical rhythms and junk-metal percussion with a frequent overload of dub effects, monstrous vocal incantations, surreal samples, and blasts of oppressive electronic noise; the band cites bands like Swans, Test Dept and Einsturzende Neubauten as influences on what they do, but they take those classic industrial sounds and wrap them around a framework of crushing tribal drums, Godflesh-style beats and grinding distorted basslines.
The album is introduced with a few minutes of delicate sonar-like emissions and swells of metallic ambience, but pretty quickly it kicks into the vicious factory groove of "Body Hammer", a pummeling hammer-on-anvil dirge that sounds like early Swans or Godflesh with the guitars eviscerated and replaced by the rhythmic whine of a high-powered drill, howling wind-tunnel effects, and gnarled, sputtering electronics, while the vocalist bellows over top in short, succinct bursts of rage. Slow and pounding, trance-inducing, it's heavily steeped in a classic industrial sound but WAY more menacing and heavy except for the part towards the end when the band seems to unravel into a chaotic, almost free-jazz burst of noise and percussion. The super-heavy percussion and slow-mo industrial rhythms return on the second track "Gravity Factor", but here they are infused with abrasive waves of flanger effects and high pitched drones, a pummeling industrial dub blast that slips into a rigid martial rhythm halfway through, a la a much heavier Test Dept.
The heaviest track on the disc might be "Voodoo Machine", which sounds the most like classic Godflesh; the singer bellows out harsh, spiteful mantras over simple distorted bass riffs and pounding tribal drums, as bits of electronic noise and crushing distorted synths are piled on, creating a seriously evil, malevolent atmosphere, like we're hearing Godflesh score a soundtrack for warring street gangs on the streets of Johannesburg. Then "The Beast" drags out a super-heavy dose of industrialized dub, with booming bass drums and piston-like blasts of percussive power bathed in delay and echo, like something from Godflesh's Love And Hate in Dub minus the guitars and riffs, the dystopian dub-dirge defleshed and stripped down to a spare, shambling groove, surrounded by the sound of distant swells of distortion, high flute-like notes, all kinds of effects and percussive splatter drenched in delay, processed vocals and samples, drifting along in a black cloud of shambling, skittering tribal deathdub. "Power Exchange" cranks up the distortion to the max and unleashes huge gouts of crumbling, ultra-blown-out noise over crushing metallic bass riffs and pounding Swans-style drumming, and "Death Mantra" serves up wicked spacey effects and psychedelic electronics across a punishing pneumatic pulse.
Toward the end of the album, things get a little more ambient and laid back, with the heavier elements of Sektor 304's sound alternating with the more droning sounds of "Pulse Generator", which descends into a sweltering urban hell painted with thick droning synths, swaths of ominous pitch-black ambience, distant percussive throb, scraping metal and clattering debris, like a John Carpenter soundtrack tained by the clang and buzz of Einsturzende Neubauten, streaked with short passages of spoken word recordings that have been treated with various effects, and keening high-pitched sinewaves...or the epic twelve minute "Final Transmission" that builds into a towering wall of distorted drone, orchestral noise, tribal drums, and massive waves of brain-melting cosmic effects that evolves into a stunning outro with arpeggiated melodies and phased synths that turns the last few minutes of the album into a soaring, Tangerine Dream-esque rush of kosmiche sound.
Nicely packaged in a six-panel digipack, with artwork by Sektor 304's Andre Coelho."

Review na Gothtronic

Band: Sektor 304(int)
Label: Malignant Records
Genre: industrial (industrial / noise / power electronics)
Type: cd
Grade: 9

"Now for something totally different! Or so they say. Well, it may not be totally different, but Sektor 304, a new band from Portugal if I’m not mistaken, still has a kind of different sound than other Malignant projects. While Sektor 304 totally fit within the Malignant esthetics, mixing old school industrial elements with the newer wave, it still sounds different. Sektor 304 have as much to do with the old school of SPK, as with the newer sounds of something like STROM.ec. Here and there there’s also a fair share of tribal and ritual elements to be found. It’s mostly their old school SPK like approach that sets them apart from the other Malignant acts. ‘Soul Cleansing’ marks also the debut of Sektor 304.

The album starts with ‘Body Hammer’, which immediately shows their SPK sensibilities of mixing electric machinery into their sounds and rhythms. ‘Gravity Factor’ has a kind of Stratvm Terror sound to it. Lots of screeching and electronic drums. A relatively short song, just under 3 minutes, but very good audio torture. ‘Voodoo Machine’ starts with some dark ambient sounds before a ritualistic rhythm comes in, hence the title of the song. There are also some guitars used that work very well with the tribal elements. It’s again very much grounded in old school industrial like SPK, but with a more obscure ritualistic industrial tribal sound. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a very good song. Then up is ‘Pulse Generator’, which is bases around a kind of pulse sound for the entire duration, with all kinds of subtle obscure and eerie sounds added on top. A song that will definitely creep you out late at night! ‘The Beast’ has a more groovy industrial sound to it. It also brings back the kind of obscure ritualistic industrial elements of the third song. ‘Power Exchange’ isn’t really kidding around and makes full use of its title! It’s a very raw percussion track with all kinds of industrial sounds and raw vocals on top. The song grows more intense as it progresses to climax in utter static noise. ‘Blood Rush’ is a very dark and ritualistic ambient track that kind of reminds of Wolfskin. The track title ‘Death Mantra’ sounds like a charm, and it is. It’s a more experimental song with a mid-tempo rhythm and all kinds of industrial clanging and raw vocals. The album ends with the epic track ‘Final Transmission’. It sounds like the logical conclusion were the album has worked to. A combination of industrial soundscapes, semi-melodic sounds and noise elements. The song ends in a kind of soothing shoegaze passage.

‘Soul Cleansing’ is a great album and a brilliant debut! Though it does sound different then the other Malignant releases, it still contains the esthetics of the label so that it is still an unmistakable Malignant release. Malignant is one of the very few labels where every release seems to connect together to create kind of mystical sound universe. Sektor 304 is a band to really keep an eye on and ‘Soul Cleansing’ is an album that every fan of industrial music needs to have! Highly recommended."

"SEKTOR 304 – SOUL CLEANSING (CD by Malignant Records)
Texas label Malignant Records has a strong focus in the darker and more extreme areas of the electronic scene in their catalogue of releases. Present album is no exception. A couple of days ago I watched Pascal Laugier’s price-winning and shockingly extreme movie “Martyrs”; a tale depicting extreme human behavior and depravity. As I shortly after listened to the debut “Soul cleansing” from Portugal’s Sektor 304, I was brought in similar worlds of extremity and sheer darkness. In comparison to earlier reviewed titles from Malignant Records, Sektor 304’s “Soul cleansing” doesn’t move to the extremely harsh expressions of the contemporary noise or power electronics-scene. The extremity of the album more likely is based in the dark and destructive atmospheres. Sector 304 creates hardcore Industrial in similar territories to Godflesh (circa “Streetcleaner”), Saw Throat and Scorn meaning industrial noises and drones added guttural growls and painful guitar distortions. With “Soul cleansing” Malignant Records makes a step towards the metal-based Industrial scene with an excellent album that could be this decade’s edition of Godflesh’s “Streetcleaner”. This is black art in its most beautiful form! (NM)"

"Amazing!! For long time back to more traditional and old school industrial. Heavy percussion junk, synth, bass, vocals, noises.. Think of Test Dept, Militia, etc at their best. You can forget about bands earlier CDR´s, this is heavy studio production and essential for any fanatics of industrial. Nowadays this type of material is becoming more and more rare, and the back-to-roots wibe but without any lame retro things. BUY IT ! Malignant.

Nova review na Plague Haus webzine

http://plaguehaus.com/main/index.php?op ... 6&Itemid=1

Portugal’s Sektor 304 is one of those bands that seemed to appear on my radar overnight, not that I’ve got my finger on the pulse of everything new and good in the underground, but a release of this magnitude should have at least caught my attention at some point. But oh well, I’m well aware of them now and that’s really what I’m here for, to be aware and make you the same.

Sektor 304 plays Industrial Music in it’s purest and best form, sighting influences that apparent on your first listen: early Test Dept, Swans, EN, Knifeladder and a heavy dose of Godflesh. Far from being watered down ninth generation versions of the above mentioned acts, S-304 chews them up, digest them and regurgitates something totally their own. I know you’ve heard this all before, but this is one band that truly lives up to that cliché.

The album kicks off with “Body Hammer”. Easily my favorite on the disc with its 55 gal drum percussion, power tool accompaniment and total Godflesh worship bass and vocal attack. This track will immediately stop you in your tracks and have your undivided attention. “Gravity Factor” deals more in industrialized noise with sporadic percussion and phased-out loops. At just under two and a half minutes, it’s like a noisy interlude. “Voodoo Machine” keeps up the pace set in the first track with a layer of ominous bass and vocals, heavy-hitting percussion and atmospheric blasts of noise. Next up is the sizzling, almost ambient “Pulse Generator”. It’s what I’d imagine what working in one of those government radar facilities might sound like. The sounds are subtle with distant clangs of metal and an undercurrent of percussion. “The Beast” pounds and pulses with bass that plods like a mastodon, echoing vocals as well as percussion and tendrils of synth that twist & writhe like a decapitated snake.

Another slow burn is “Power Exchange”. Everything revolves around the rhythm, static pulses of white hiss over factory percussion. and underlying build up of pure static noise eventually builds and eclipses all else. “Blood Rush” is another ambient vision, but not that open, airy kind of ambience. This is heavy and oppressive with thick layers of sound crushing the air out of you. A distant tribal drumming begins to take hold, hypnotic, mesmerizing until it builds to a frightening climax and comes full circle, ending as it began. “Death Mantra” is another bass/percussion heavy track that would have been just as at home on Streetcleaner as it is hear. I have to say, the way these guys make use of metal as percussion is just awe inspiring. The disc ends with the “Final Transmission”. Strums of bass and layers of atmospheric noise are cut through with an almost Prog Rock injection of ringing guitar. After the heaviness of the previous tracks, it’s a beautiful reprieve.

Mastered by J. Stillings of Steel Hook Prostheses and housed in a magnificent 6-panel digipak, this disc is in my Top 5 for 2009. For fans of real Industrial music, this is absolutely a must own. I don’t think I’ve ever picked up a Malignant release I didn’t like, but this one has set the bar amazingly high. And I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on this project.

Most People Have Been Trained to be Bored é o projecto a solo de

Gristle e Scorn, Swans e Test Dpt, Godflesh e musica tribal africana,
temas retirados do mais recente disco "Soul Cleansing" irão ser
colocados lado a lado com novas composições nunca antes apresentadas!
