On the 27th of March, date of the 15th edition of the Siege of Limerick festival in the Republic of Ireland [a festival that included Grunt on their initial confirmations], Grunt were surprised by what seemed to be a bad taste joke. The whole band attended the festival since we were on tour with Holocausto Canibal and Basement Torture Killings, so, despite the cancellation [of which we had no details regarding the why’s and why not’s], we were still enjoying this great festival.
Alongside many other bands which put on great shows, were Abaddon Incarnate, an Irish band which we all knew since 2009 [Bill Whelan and Steve Maher were members of the band by that time], when we Grunt, as festival organizers, booked their first show ever in our home country, Portugal.
By the end of their solid and brutal performance, we were approached by their new bass player:

[also part of the black metal bands Wound Upon Wound and Sodb], who promptly told us:
"I was the one responsible for Grunt cancelation at Siege of Limerick because what you do to women is disrespectful and I cannot permit that".
We must add that we were astonished by the pride and sarcasm presented by Irene, of whom we never heard about before and never had any contact whatsoever. Despite our surprise when hearing such words, we tried to talk about it even though Irene seemed completely surprised and kept reacting elusively to our calm and serenity. We must highlight that, at this point, we only wanted to know the reasons that lead to this shamefully coward and despicable attitude, since the damage to our reputation was already done by then. We were trying to find out if there was any valid reason behind such standing or if it was just the outcome of some childish angst without any justification.
The irony is that Irene stands for anti-religious views through the bands in which she plays, through their lyrics, with quite explicit words and attitudes and she’s based in one of the most catholic countries in the world, the Republic of Ireland.
We are all about the hard earned freedom of expression and, despite of what many might believe, we are actually quite feminists. Every woman who crosses our path is treated in a respectful and courteous way. The same applies to the other genders (yes, we do believe in the multitude of genders, as you have noticed by our lyrics) and to any living being.
Do our live BDSM performances shock you? Well, too bad for you. BDSM is all about freedom and the possibility to express oneself through whatever kind of sexual act you think is necessary.
If you like to adorned in latex, pierced by needles or whatever fetishism... you might imagine, it’s always performed with CONSENT. If you google it, you’ll read a lot about the willingness of the participants in being either dominants or submissive and so on and so on.
We’re not here to give you a lesson in BDSM, but to express our disappointment and despise regarding such IGNORANT attitudes, like Irene’s. Fetishism is just another way of freedom, especially if you’re a woman. If we look back, women have been victims of oppression in any way possible, either because they are the “weaker sex” or because society doesn’t know any better, so, if our performers want to express themselves through acts of submission, it is their own FREEDOM and WILL to do so.
So, we kindly suggest everyone with Irene’s view to do some RESEARCH and READING about what feminism and sexual freedom is before going through such trouble of trying to boycott a band that instead of just writing, actually goes all the way with their views and beliefs. If such research reveals to be insufficient, please drops us a message, we’ll be happy to hear from you and discuss whatever you might want regarding these topics, but please, just stay the f*** out of our way!
