Excelente! Um álbum cheio de melodias folk que ficam no ouvido. Para já, um dos meu preferidos este ano.

Recently The Meads Of Asphodel vocalist Metatron announced that he was working on a more pagan-minded side-project. ‘Carrion Crows Over Camlan’ is its first release, and although The Wolves Of Avalon aren’t a particularly radical departure from The Meads, it is an album distinct enough to justify it not being part of The Meads’ canon.

Unsurprisingly Metatron’s distinct, gruff vocals, as well as the actual music itself, often bring The Meads Of Asphodel to mind, but the stylistic palette of The Wolves Of Avalon is much more restricted. Call it less eclectic or more coherent, but it goes without saying that it’s certainly not as special as Metatron’s main band. The midtempo pagan metal owes a lot to Bathory (not strange given that the album is dedicated to Quorthon), but it also shows more than just the occasional nod to the British gods of doom; especially the violin-based songs often bring to mind the archetypal sound of My Dying Bride.

Besides the usual thundering midtempo drums and epic riffs, a great deal of guest contributions, another thing The Meads Of Asphodel have always been great at, can be found on ‘Carrion Crows Over Camlan’, lending the album a more genuine, traditional, folky feel without getting to close to, say, Finntroll. Moreover, Rob Darken (Graveland) lends his vocal chords to the title song, which is not only the fastest but also one of the catchiest tunes on the album. Being a side project, The Wolves Of Avalon cannot entirely live up to the high expectations that go hand in hand with The Meads Of Asphodel, but it’s a good debut album, offering solid pagan metal spiced up with yet another great narrative from Metatron.
