(Just Kill The Time - Arthur Matos - Nota 10/10)
"Spectrum" inicia o álbum de uma forma bem cadenciada, e despretenciosa. A música é bem simples, diga-se de passagem, porém já mostra os primeiros sinais de mudança em relação aos trabalhos anteriores. O timbre da guitarra está melhor (Bem melhor), o solo é bom e o vocal é acima da média. Apesar de não ser espetacular a faixa dá mostras do que virá a seguir.
"Kairos", a faixa título, já havia sido liberada há algum tempo, sendo a música já bem conhecida dos fãs. É ai que os riffs abafados, citados no começo da resenha começam a aparecer. A faixa é um thrash "mid-tempo" muito pesada e com sinais de criatividade muito interessantes de Andreas Kisser. O vocal de Derrick nessa música impressiona e a bateria de Jean, mesmo que simples cumpre bem o papel. Boa faixa.
"Relentless", a terceira do álbum, é assim como as outras muito pesada e tem muito groove, porém aqui a velocidade começa a aumentar. É interessante que nesse álbum a velocidade começa lá em baixo até descambar para o que teremos no final... Enfim, prossigamos. Em poucos mais de três minutos a música não tem muitas mudanças de andamento porém a mesma se mostra bem eficiente. E o solo... Ouça e confira. Kisser kicks ass! A primeira intro do álbum ("2011") dá as caras, sem tirar muito a coesão do trabalho, até que "Just One Fix", cover do Ministry soa nos auto-falantes. Há quem tenha odiado a versão, porém eu, que não sou muito fã de Industrial achei a versão do Sepultura bem interessante e adaptada as caracteristicas do quarteto. Boa escolha!
Posso estar errado, mas ao ler as entrevistas de divulgação do trabalho e ter ouvido o álbum depois, eu tive a impressão que o começo do álbum soa como o Sepultura recente voltando faixa após faixa as raízes da banda, porém carregando o melhor obtido nesses anos pós-Max. Sendo assim o começo do álbum, bem lento e com muito groove, vai dando lugar, pouco a pouco a faixas com maior velocidade e peso, remetendo aos bons tempos da era death/thrash. E a sexta música "Dialog" ao meu ver aparece como a divisora das duas eras. A faixa que no início tem uma levada bem contagiante e atual, vai ganhando peso, até que um excelente solo (mais um), serve de porta de entrada para as palhetadas monstruosas de Kisser, e porque não como uma intro para a próxima música, a primeira da sequencia mais brutal do disco.
"Mask" já começa com as guitarras pedindo espaço, anunciando o massacre que está por vir. O que dizer então da bateria pesadíssima e dos blast-beats no refrão? Sinceramente não esperava ouvir isso do Sepultura de novo. Que bom que eu estava enganado. Mais um solo competente e o vocal de Derrick novamente destruindo e temos aqui uma das melhores faixas da banda em anos. Destaque para o final totalmente death. Prosseguindo temos a breve "1433" que dá lugar a 'Seethe", outra faixa que já é conhecida dos headbangers, já que a mesma vem sendo executada a alguns meses nas apresentações da banda. Velocidade e peso é o que temos aqui. Mas quem pediu outra coisa? "Born Strong", que nos remete aos tempos de "Arise", é na minha humilde opinião a melhor faixa do play. Com algumas mudanças de andamento e mais riffs insanos a música se destaca por completo. E ai já percebo que meu pescoço começa a doer. Bom sinal.
"Embrace the Storm", é provavelmente a composição do álbum que mostra a maior coesão dos membros da banda, com um merecido destaque para Jean e Kisser. Mais uma das melhores do álbum. Riffs, riffs e mais riffs! Incrível. Penúltima intro ("5772") e damos de cara com a música mais Thrash do trabalho. Remetendo a algo de Schizophrenia/Beneath The Remains/Arise, "No One Will Stand" destrói tudo. Inclusive o que estiver por perto enquanto você escuta a mesma. Melhor trabalho de guitarra/bateria/baixo do álbum. Bom, nessa altura do campeonato lembro que alegria de pobre dura pouco já que o álbum já está acabando. A 14º faixa "Structure Violence (Azzes)" é a mais experimental do álbum o que não faz a mesma ruim - longe disso. Contando com a parceria do grupo percussivo francês "Les Tambours du Bronx" a faixa se mostra deveras interessante, assim como "4648" que fecha o melhor álbum do Sepultura em muito, muito tempo.
Qual a conclusão disso tudo? Diga-mos que é complicado afirmar que a banda voltará ao topo novamente, mas agora em pleno 2011, se isso acontecer, motivos e merecimento não faltará. Max e Igor sempre serão lembrados como ícones e revolucionários de um estilo, porém a tão sonhada reunião já não faz mais tanto sentido. Não se a banda continuar assim. É, o Sepultura voltou. Kill The Time!

Faixa 1 – Spectrum: Uma música simples, sem muita firula e não muito pesada para os padrões do Sepultura. Tem um bom solo de Andreas o que faz a diferença nessa introdução.
Faixa 2 – Kairos: O álbum parece tomar forma a partir da faixa-título. Instrumentos mais acelerados e Derrick urrando mais nessa boa música parece um bom presságio.
Faixa 3 – Relentless: Pegou velocidade, agora vai! Um trash metal diferente, com a cara do Sepultura “moderno”. Andreas se mostra novamente com bons riffs de guitarra feitos em cima de uma base sólida.
Faixa 4 – 2011: Introdução sampleada para a próxima faixa.
Faixa 5 – Just One Fix: E temos aqui um bom cover do Ministry.
Faixa 6 – Dialog: Partes faladas por Derrick assim como num diálogo se misturam a um refrão muito bom. Música pegada.
Faixa 7 – Mask: Até aqui a mais pesada e melhor música dos disco na minha opinião. A cozinha de Jean e Paulo faz um grande diferença para os riffs e solos de Andreas.
Faixa 8 – 1433: Mais samplers?! Interessante...
Faixa 9 – Seethe: Música mais rápida e porrada até aqui. O nocaute demora pouco mais de 2 minutos.
Faixa 10 – Born Strong: Derrick urrando até a garganta explodir! Todos estão muito bem nessa ótima música, em especial Jean Dolabella, espancando sem dó sua bateria!
Faixa 11 – Embrance The Storm: Mantém o nível das anteriores, espere coisa boa.
Faixa 12 – 5772: Outra intro de samplers.
Faixa 13 – No One Will Stand: A mais trash metal do álbum. Com boas levadas e quebradas durante a música.
Faixa 14 - Structure Violence (Azzes): Sinceramente? Uma viagem que acho até que pode servir de introdução nos show, mas o disco poderia ter acabado na faixa anterior.
Confesso a vocês que mesmo depois de A-Lex eu não perdi a fé no Sepultura e aguardava ansiosamente por esse novo disco. Apesar de gostar bastante de Arise e de Nation acho esse o melhor disco da banda com Derrick Green nos vocais. Não vou citar ou fazer comparações com os álbuns clássicos da era Max Cavalera, chega disso! Que me desculpem suas viúvas, mas já deu o que tinha que dar esse tipo de comparação. Derrick é sim um grande e competente vocalista e prova isso em Kairos.Se é que ele ainda tinha algo a provar. Andreas fez ótimos solos e riffs durante todo o disco contando com a cozinha mais do que ajustada de Paulo Xisto e Jean Dolabella. A banda nos faz esquecer os 2 discos anteriores, Dante XXI e A-Lex, baseados em A Divina Comédia e Laranja Mecânica, respectivamente. O Sepultura voltou a fazer um disco baseado em si mesmo, em seus membros e em suas experiências. Por isso acertou! A faixa-título Kairos é a segunda música do disco e já mostra o que está por vir. Em seguida, temos Relentless com uma cara mais moderna, mas com um pé no trash. A faixa Just one fix é cover de Ministry e ficou bem legal. Mask é para mim a melhor música desse disco. Destaque também para Seethe , a mais rápida das músicas desse álbum é uma bela pancadaria. Bom, tirando as “graças” feitas com os samplers/introduções que achei que não tinha necessidade, todas as faixas tem o seu (bom) valor. Entendo que nenhuma delas é ruim, pelo contrário. Esse disco foi produzido por Roy Z que já trabalhou com músicos do calibre de Judas Priest e Bruce Dickinson, dificilmente essa combinação daria errado. Não há estranheza e ao final desse trabalho não ficamos nos perguntando: “O Sepultura fez isso?”. Foi realmente uma grata surpresa e agora que a ansiedade passou vou escutá-lo e me preparar para mais um show, o quinto, agora nessa nova turnê.

There is a school of thought that suggests Sepultura ceased to be after founding member Max Cavalera left the fold at the end of 1996. And there are those who say that Sepultura definitely ceased to be when his younger brother Igor quit the drumstool in 2006. There are even some who say that Arise – released way back in 1991 – was the last album worthy of being released under the name. If you believe any of these then latest album Kairos doesn’t really stand much of a chance, does it?
Fortunately the band, in its current incarnation of guitarist Andreas Kisser, bassist Paulo Jr., vocalist Derrick Greene and relatively new drummer Jean Dolabella, have put aside the conceptual noodlings of their previous two albums and decided to focus again on writing fully formed songs, and not just songs but – and wait for it – kick-ass metal songs. Don’t believe it? Try listening to the opening double-whammy of ‘Spectrum’ and the brutal title track, forged from the same furnace as Beneath the Remains or Arise. Still not convinced? How about the old-school thrash attack of ‘Relentless’ or the Obituary-esque ‘Born Strong’, complete with heavy low-end grooves and “We are what we are” war-cry.
Credit must go to Jean Dolabella, who certainly leaves his stamp over all the album’s 15 tracks. Replacing a powerhouse drummer as iconic and inventive as Igor Cavalera was never going to be easy but the relentless way in which Dolabella attacks his kit throughout is truly remarkable. Also Andreas Kisser’s guitars fill out all the spaces that the drums don’t, making the guitar more dominant than it has been on recent releases. Let us not forget that when Max Cavalera left, the band lost not only their singer but also their rhythm guitarist, but Kisser fills both roles more than adequately.
Elsewhere, singer Derrick Greene pulls no punches with his extraordinary delivery ranging from creepy spoken word (‘Dialog’), through hardcore snarls (‘Mask’), and into death metal territory (‘No One Will Stand’), giving his best performance since 2001′s excellent Nation album.
So are there any bad points to this album? For me, nothing really. There IS a slight dip in the middle with tracks like ‘Seethe’ and their cover of Ministry’s ‘Just One Fix’ not quite kicking to the gut as much as the other tracks, and the 30 second interludes don’t really serve any purpose other than to separate out the barrages of noise that sit either side of them, but otherwise this is great stuff from a band who seemed to have pulled themselves back from the brink of mediocrity in the nick of time.

I honestly had absolutely zero intentions of reviewing Sepultura’s new album. As curiosity would have it, it got the best of me when they posted the first song and title track online a few weeks ago. Naturally, when the promo dropped on Nuclear Blast, I figured it couldn’t hurt. I tried my best on their last release to really like it. At first listen I ended up giving it a fairly decent review on my first metal blog. Moving forward I found it easily forgettable and dry. The concept was good, being that they grafted it around one of my favorite Stanley Kubrick films (adapted from the 1962 Anthony Burgess novel), A Clockwork Orange. Sadly my initial reaction and liking for the album faded quickly. I had finally given up on Sepultura, or the shell of what once was. When I heard a new album was coming out, I wrote it off in a heart beat and honestly wanted nothing to do with it. Curiosity got the best of me as it often does.
As I started to write this review, I started to listen to Kairos for a third time. A funny thing happened, because honestly I wasn’t really feeling the album the first two times. I began to listen again and the album started to grow on me rather quickly and I started to enjoy it. I stopped writing the review and figured that I would give the album a little more time. I have now given the album a few more listens and I can honestly say that I’m enjoying it.
While most of the rhythms seem simple and sometimes repetitive, they are good rhythms and riffs. It almost seems as if Andreas Kisser decided to almost dumb things down a bit and start thinking like he did back in the 90′s when Max was in the band. However, listening back to some of the post-Max albums it doesn’t really seem like he’s trying to change things up much at all, but keep a cleaner sound and tone. It’s almost an anomaly to me. Am I just being a bitter prick when listening to Derrick Green era Sepultura or did I truly not like what I heard on Against, Roarback, Nation, Dante XXI and A-Lex? I really have to back things up some and listen to a bit of those albums to figure it out. Perhaps I have to stop thinking about Sepultura being the band that once had Max Cavalera fronting it and Igor playing drums. It has become a mental dilemma for me in which I’m kind of confused by emotion and/or memory of something I once held high. Is it not the same band? Should I think of it as a totally different band and enjoy what I hear regardless of my attachment to what once was? Is my own loyalty becoming my own worst enemy, being resistant to songs that I might just like but in reality choose not to because of something stupid? Maybe; but for now I need to focus on Kairos and work out my issues on my own with the other albums later.
(Two days later) So here I am, listening to the album for about the seventh time. While it’s not the Sepultura that I fell in love with long ago, it’s still a good band that has it together both musically and as a brotherhood. I remember reading an interview with Andreas where he said that back in the day that Sepultura was not just a band but a brotherhood of friends. He went on to say that while band members may have changed, the feeling is still the same. I commend him for that and also commend him for putting up with the fact that every two minutes someone is asking about a Sepultura reunion of the classic line up. If I was him, I would have by now told the interviewers from the get-go to just not bother asking that question. After all, it is his band now. So, back to the album.
With the last two albums, Sepultura have focused on conceptual writing. Dante XXI was written around the concept of Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, a poem that is deemed as one of the greatest pieces of Italian literature. You can read deeper in to that if you desire on your own. Their last album, as I mentioned before was based around Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange. This time around Sepultura decided to keep things simplified and just made some good old metal. It’s like Sepultura of old meets Sepultura of new. However, Andreas did say that there is a basic concept behind this album. Here is an excerpt. Read the entire interview at Metal Discovery.
I guess that ‘Kairos’ is a very special concept of time; it’s not a time which is chronological. Normally, we see time like that and accept time like that. ‘Kairos’ is just a moment of opportunity and change, and I thought the concept was amazing and really represents what we are today. Live in the present, live in the now… just really respect what we are today and that’s it.
Derrick Green’s vocals sound a bit more fitting in the band on this record, or maybe that is only my personal opinion. The drumming of Jean Dolabella works well with the band and as usual Paulo Jr. does what he does on the bass guitar. Andreas, as I said earlier, has simplified his riffs and rhythms on this album to a groove that brings back the sound and tones of Beneath The Remains, Arise and Chaos A.D.. His solos are fierce yet eloquent and they sound very fresh.
Sepultura cover Ministry’s ‘Just One Fix’ from Psalm 69, which I didn’t actually know was a cover until Rob informed me. They also cover The Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’, which I never really liked until now. perhaps back in it’s day it was a bit overplayed on the radio and Mtv. You may have heard the title track and ‘Mask’ when they were streaming. Two very good tracks, I must say. A few of my favorites are Spectrum, Dialog and Embrace The Storm.
Over all I am more than satisfied with Kairos. In fact, I have listened to it over and over about 6 more times over the last two days; not because I feel that I had to but because I wanted to. I would even go so far as to say that I love it. This is the first Sepultura album, sans Max and Igor that I actually like. If you were in the same boat as I was and haven’t liked any Sepultura albums in a very long time, give Kairos a few listens and I think you might really like what you hear as well. With Kairos, Speultura have done what has needed to be done and made me finally forget the line-up that I fell in love with long ago and listen to and enjoy the band and music without thinking about it as Speultura of yesterday. Does this inspire me to go back to the last five Sepultura albums and re-listen to them, hoping that I might actually like them as much? Let me just stick to Kairos for now. I’ll get to those albums some day and perhaps work out my issues with them at another time.
