Um álbum que estou a curtir muito. Apesar de só o ter apanhado há coisa de uns 15 dias, entrou directamente para o meu top 10 do ano.
This german band can be used as example to explain how a grim and frost black metal band can be able to evolve in some magnificent project including progressive passages, melodies and a rich songwriting.
'Angst' is, by all purpose and means, a strong and pretty difficult release to listen to, with difficult I simply mean that you won't find the classic linear patterns you can expect to find in 90% of cold (and classic) BM albums, since these guys have such a taste for experimenting new ways and solutions. If I had to choose a particular feature of this album, probably I'd mention the excellent and dreamy use of ethereal lead guitar textures: I definitely love these parts, they are incredibly working in the context of the songs and add a huge amount of atmosphere (reminded me of Novembre's early works).
Of course Todtgelichter didn't completely switched into a melodic band, no way: their ancient love for aggressive metal is still here, simply now it has a higher and more mature purpose than the classic and not remarkable evil for evil sake. I don't really know if this album could be labeled as avantgarde BM and honestly I'm so pissed off by all these labels that in the end I don't care. I simply would like my statements to be clear, but moreover that 'Angst' is an excellent release, which should demand the attention of any metal listener with an ear and brain for melody, let alone those who have been following the journeys of black metal into new realms with any level of enthusiasm.
