assassination, Evgeniy Gapon aka Knyaz Varggoth, leader of black metal band
Nokturnal Mortum, was gunned down late Sunday night (local time) in his
hometown of Kharkov as he was returning home from a night out with friends.
Witnesses reported seeing a black car, possibly Mercedes Benz, jumping up on
the curb in front of him, blocking his way as he was walking toward his home
nearby, a man in black mask opening fire from a machine gun from the back
seat of the car, and the car speeding away. Local police and abulance crew
arrived on the scene within 5 minutes. The victim was rushed to a local
hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Evgeniy Gapon rose to fame when he organized an underground metal band
Nokturnal Mortum in 1994. The band played Norwegian-style black metal with
some Ukrainian folk influences and quickly became popular in the underground
not only in Ukraine, but also abroad, which led to the
band's signing with The End Records label in USA. In the last few years the
band's lyrical content has become quite violent and controvercial, often
calling for violence against jews and christians, which led to a series of
public outcries both in Ukraine and in other
countries. The band's lyrics were also the grounds for their dismissal from
The End Records."
