Mastodon, banda sonora para o Jonah Hex

Not content with cracking the skye and conquering Blood Mountain, Mastodon have ventured into celluloid! They’ve been composing the sound track to Jonah Hex, a Western set in the US Civil War, which hits cinemas next summer. Guitarist Bill Kelliher gave Rock Sound the lowdown…

How did you get involved?
“We got asked by the director [Jimmy Hayward]. The director really loves our new record, loves Mastodon and just happened to be listening to Mastodon the whole time he was writing the screen play so it thought it fitting that we’d score the movie.”

You improvised the sonics whilst watching the clips – there must have been a lot of material?
“I think we gave them more than enough music so they can pick and choose. An English composer [John Powell] who lives in LA and has done a lot of amazing movies came down, listened to the stuff and said, ‘We’ve got pretty much the whole movie here’. He’s going to put it into ‘his world’, cut and edit it.”

You’ve obviously seen the movie – what can you tell us about it?
”It’s based on a comic book character. It stars Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and some big-time Hollywood actors. From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t look like some cheesy Hollywood movie, it’s more like There Will Be Blood; a dirty, gritty Western. It’s going to be pretty awesome!”

Jonah Hex is scheduled for release in June 2010
