Vic Firth Signature Artist: Danny Carey.

Finally something for Tool fans can get their teeth into. Danny Carey is the spotlight artist for Vic Firth, and they’ve published a great video interview on which Danny talks about pretty much everything, including a plan to be in the studio by June/July. The videos also feature some great drum cam footage:

Adam providing art for new Volto album?

As most of you know by now, Danny’s other band Volto! have recorded a new album, which hopefully should be released soon. A post on the Volto Facebook page today suggests that someone we know may be helping out with the artwork:

Not sure exactly what this entails, or if it’s the right Adam, so keep your eye peeled for further info!

Speaking of Volto! don’t forget that they’re playing a gig at The Mint on the 31st of March with Nothin’ Personal. According to Toolband, The Mint is located at 6010 W. Pico Blvd, LA. Be there or be square!

In Volto! news, John Z gave us a further update on the new record on Facebook a couple of days ago:

Danny features in Paiste Magazine

So, you guys are back in writing mode right now?

Yes…Justin, Adam & I are working on some stuff and Maynard will join us in another month or so, once he finished up with his ‘other band’. We’d like to get in the studio by May or June and holpefully get our new record done by the fall…we’ll see how things go. Right now, we’re throwing riffs around and seeing what feels good. So far, it’s turning out to be a bit more on the heavier side…Adam is really rockin’ out, so it’s exciting.

Tool & Dave Matthews Band to play Harriet Island Music Festival

In a post that makes me wonder if April Fools Day has come early, it’s alleged on a couple of websites that Tool and the Dave Matthews Band will be headlining the inaugural Harriet Island Music Festival in Minnesota. And here I go thinking Minnesota was an inland state!

The festival apparently takes place on the 23rd and 24th of June with Tool to play on the 23rd. Not sure I’m willing to give this too much credence at the moment, given Danny mentioning that Tool want to hit the studio by then, but I guess they could squeeze in a one off gig.

TOOL'S REHEARSAL SPACE

A rare glimpse inside Tool's storied loft - one of a dozen or so photos recently taken by Adam, Danny, and Justin while writing and arranging their contributions to the next Tool record. (Note: When Adam sent me these photos last night, I was both amazed and a bit confused because certain areas of the rehearsal space were in the past always deemed off-limits to photography. What caused this sudden change of heart to a long-standing policy I do not know, but I am certainly excited to share with fans of the band a place of such historic significance - the small room where every Tool song [from "Opiate" to the present works] was written. Think about that for a minute. Every Tool song was written in the same place. I can't imagine this ever happening with any other major band in history of rock music - they having written all of the music on all of their records over the decades in the same small room. But, that's exactly what Tool has done at the loft. Receiving the photos has inspired me to dedicate the next Tool newsletter to certain "Tales from the Loft", which I hope to post soon... along with further rare glimpses.)
