A questo si giustappone poi il corpo anni settanta, dove lo spirito sabbathiano che anima la band aleggia sinistro e Tony Iommi è vistosamente omaggiato. E poi interruzioni improvvise, con delle colorate piogge psichedeliche che per un attimo lasciano passare spiragli di luce e danno l’impressione che la band voglia tornare sui suoi passi. Ma appunto, è solo un’impressione.

«De tempos a tempos, somos confrontados com álbuns que ultrapassam essa simples esfera do registo musical e revelam-se autênticas experiências sensoriais, que nos deixam aturdidos e a remoer, durante vários dias no nosso íntimo, a forma de os poder abordar.
E este primeiro longa-duração dos portugueses Why Angels Fall encaixa, perfeitamente, nesse restrito grupo de trabalhos.
Dividido em dois longos temas, repartido, cada um, em três partes, "The Unveiling", desde os primeiros segundos, carrega uma aura e um poder completamente arrebatadores, engolindo-nos para o centro de um choque de emoções e, após o término do officium, nos atira violentamente ao chão ainda mal refeitos da vertigem que dura mais de 77 minutos.
Aqui, parece que nada foi deixado ao acaso; desde a estruturação dos temas, à mensagem, passando pelo artwork, tudo está interligado e só funciona assim, não sobrevive de partes isoladas.
Focalizando, agora, no que aqui nos traz, a música, "The Unveiling" e "Neo Genesis" são dois temas colossais, tanto pela sua duração e, sobretudo, pela qualidade que patenteiam. Foram sete anos de trabalho para erigir esta montanha, composta por partes que nos fazem lembrar uns Anathema (da fase "Serenades"/"The Silent Enigma"), como minutos depois nos fazem andar de mão dada com uns Dead Can Dance até que ressoam nas colunas linhas de pensamento baseados em passagens bíblicas do Antigo e Novo Testamento, bem como outros não bíblicos, sob uma banda sonora que nos agarra e transporta para um Apocalipse de luz.
Guitarras fortíssimas, ambientes comiseravelmente belos, contemplativos, vozes para todos os gostos e estados de espírito e, destaque para uma bateria que, de forma omnipresente mas discreta qb, segura toda esta estrutura tal, como o Atlas que às costas carrega a Terra. Tudo isto, a base para uma brutal introspecção.
Apesar de ser um registo de difícil digestão pelas razões aludidas e outras que nos escapam, talvez devido ao repetido estado ébrio em que estes temas nos colocam, "The Unveiling" é um trabalho de destaque, uma obra maior do Doom Metal nos últimos anos e que urge dar conhecimento porque, em Portugal, também se encontram diamantes. «This week's new arrivals list has included a ton of doom metal, most of which came from bands that I'd already been following for awhile, but one of the biggest surprise discoveries was this obscure Portugese band called Why Angels Fall, who have been around in one form or another since the late 90s but only now released the first full length album. And it's pretty fucking amazing, definitely sounding like these guys have spent some time developing their complex avant-doom, mutating their Peaceville doomdeath influences with theological imagery, a serious prog undercurrent, and most surprisingly, a crushing melodic edge that makes whole sections of The Unveiling sound like Harvey Milk crossed with that classic Peaceville heaviness! There's just two songs, but as you can imagine, they're ultra-long, drawn out epics of atmospheric doom, the first one sprawling out for almost the entire album...
The first song "The Unveiling" is an immense 43+ minute prog-doom saga that opens with screaming guitar shred, amp buzz, and swirling effects over heavy rolling tribal drums, sounding like some crushing free-improv noise-rock jam a la early Skullflower or Splintered, stretching this free-guitar blast out for almost five minutes. Then without warning, the band suddenly drops in with the massive doom metal, insanely deep and roaring death metal vocals, huge fuzz-soaked glacial boogie, but with a weird melodic element that sounds a little like Harvey Milk gone deathdoom. The drumming is seriously heavy, the riff stretching out across the elephantine dirge, and some sinister psychedelic solos start to appear, leading the way into a passage of groovier psych-metal. Those guttural vokills are sparsely used, but when they do show up, they're intense and impassioned, a gruff, emotive roar that sounds like a deeper, more monstrous version of Creston Spiers. This crushing sludgy metal eventually fades off and is replaced by sprawling meditative ambience, spacey guitars and droning synths and sitar-like drones buzzing and drifting, hand drums appearing banging away beneath some seriously stoned psychedelic raga-drone, and as the deep baritone vocals come in, backed by hushed growls, this starts to sound like some haunting World Serpent style gothic psychedelia, the sound building and growing until it finally erupts in a white-light blast of AWESOME melodic sludge, soaring strings suddenly crashing in, a massive melodic hook revealng itself at the heart of the distorted metallic crush, the singer shifting now between the deep growling and that scorched baritone. The song continues to move through lumbering doom metal and soft ambient drift, gentle piano figures and distant choirs appearing later on, as well as the sound of an immense crackling fire, some spoken-word coming in, all dramatic and mystical sounding, until the music finally evolves into droning, mammoth Western-tinged doom with sun baked slide guitar twang that ends the track.
"Neo-Genesis" is another epic, opening with more of that quasi-mystical spoken word over swirling synths, then the band descends into crushing melodic doom once again, shifting between twangy Western dustbowl doom and more funereal sections where the band recedes into more forlon shadows, their pipe organs suddenly swelling up alongside melancholy guitar lines, veering into Skepticism territory. After awhile, the doom is replaced by just the sound of mournful piano drifting through the darkness, which last for some time before the tribal drums come rushing in, and wailing feedback and heavy, throbbing bass signals the arrival of crushing post-punk tinged metal, almost Killing Joke-ish, but massive, thundering, the heaviness stretching out till the very end, when the music drifts out on a dreamy wash of piano and Dead Can Dance style ethnic vocals. Such a great doom album, progressive and ultra-heavy, highly recommended to fans of everything from My Dying Bride to While Heaven Wept.» © CRUCIAL BLAST

«Finalmente aqui chegados. O álbum de estreia dos Why Angels Fall, uma banda que sempre me pareceu um pouco distante daquilo que era convencional, uma ideia formada pelo que tinha ouvido até este disco, que se confirmou com a audição do mesmo, bem como com a visualização de um concerto do grupo.
Dificilmente encontram par em Portugal, no conceito, na interpretação e, porque não dizê-lo, na coragem. Isto porque "The Unveiling" tem apenas....duas faixas, distribuídas por um total de mais de setenta minutos. Sejamos um pouco mais precisos. O disco divide-se em duas partes, "The Unveiling" e "Neo Genesis". Não fica muito fácil analisar um disco que serve essencialmente para ser...ouvido.

Sim todos têm essa finalidade mas o conceito dos Why Angels Fall eleva a audição a patamares superiores. Não é fácil ouvir um disco destes quase "de enfiada", aqui não há espaço para refrões, para riffs gritantes. Tudo é imediatismo, a batalha entre o mais ambiental e um ou outro toque de distorção.
É um disco Doom Metal, claramente e essa ideia já a tínhamos passado nas palavras anteriores, aliás não me parece que exista alguém que leia esta resenha, que não conheça o grupo de Nero, Miguel,Júlio, Rob e Basílio assim como o seu cariz progressivo e retro. Aliás tantos nomes e tantos sons Doom Metal, tantos acordes arrastados que temos ouvido no que entre nós se vai fazendo, "The Unveiling" arrisca-se a ser, de mansinho, um dos discos mais bem conseguidos do ano e que eleva patamares no que do género se faz entre nós. Pena não dar para destacar um tema....destaca-se quando muito excertos do disco. Um disco que é, de facto, para ser ouvido.»

«Why Angels fall. It’s not a question; would it be a proposition? Like: ‘We’ll tell you why angels fall... We’ll tell you about faith, God and sins, about rebellion and freedom, about chains and wisdom”. Vast program. Those ideas are hidden in the core of Why Angels Fall’s musical project; the unveiling has begun...
'The Unveiling' opens on pumelling bass drum, droning guitars, atmospheric keys, full of tension; the guitar sound and the groovy rhythm bear hints of the american Stoner Doom scene; a kind of brooding decontraction. They guys take their time; the desert session expands during a few minutes, topped by sporadic raspy grunts that herald some grey clouds to come.

The album is divided in two parts, each one being itself divided in three equal movements. It all flows without any breaks (but a micro blank between the two main parts which is bit incomprehensible, like a production defect). The lyrics refer to the First Testament, the creation of the universe, the coming of Jesus Christ. This allows the band to use hebraic as well as greek in the texts and also justifies the inclusion of a sitar, traditional percussions, wailing choruses and strange oniric keyboard’s effects in the sophisticated instrumentation.

The voice leads the march, reciting the text that obviously carries a meaning of great importance to the band. Often, the pace is slow and tranquil, arabic drums, riffs full of oriental arabesques; exotic patterns that light up a Death Doom basis that runs like a undercurrent beneath all the album and sometimes bursts open the quiet surface to let a burning flow overwhelm everything. The voice roars, the guitars weep tragic and threatening melodic lines... Till it all culminates in the first part around a key-chorus:
It echoes in the wind, it flows in
The streams,
It drones in the earth
It pulses within

...Which is repeated in different moods like a esoteric mantra. The effect is really striking. Other moments have the same kind of devastating effect that let you amazed; all along the 77 minutes that compose 'The Unveiling', you won’t escape ultra crushing blocks of massive Doom, don’t worry!

Why Angels Fall develop on 'The Unveiling' a modern approach of Doom Metal. The flow is progressive... it’s subtle and full of a great spirituality. We soon get lost in the maze of changing soundscapes. Which could be a bit off-puting for some as there are few truly memorable moments. The entire album is an expertly woven tapestery, never straightforward and , I must add, never brutal. It’s much more a kind of Doom version of Orphaned land or a slightly more quiet cousin of Mar De Grises. Why Angel Fall’s Doom is first and foremost intriguing, magical and fascinating. Their ambitious compositions drag us from soothing moments to thundering armaggedon over tons of anxious and passionate mental pictures.

The band plays with our nerves and know how to make the tension rise. They intertwine rich moods and somber rhythms. Never predictable, it distills a surprising sense of intensity. And raises a singular and sophisticated piece of doom that towers high above the flat line of most Death Doom bands’ encephalogram.

Doom as funereal as this does not make an easy listen at any time of year, let alone in the months of summer, thus explaining why months after a friend treated me to a copy of Why Angels Fall's debut album "The Unveiling" I can only now review it. Hailing from Portugal and in the truest of doom fashion it has taken the band 13 long years to get their debut album out, an album of two megalithic songs closing in at a combined 77 minutes; two songs so crushing and full of voyage they cannot be grasped with ease. In the title track which greets us, it's 43 minutes feature countless eclectic solos, never dull and often brilliant, which epitomise the freedom of time and space that is created when a rhythm section is as bassy and slow as found here. While the deep bass line reminds of Asunder's ponderous heaviosity WAF manage to at all times feel as if they are moving forward, constantly flowing and moving unlike some of the more deathly-doom bands out there. The Middle Eastern flourishes hinted on the album cover and earlier soloing take precedence around the 13-minute mark when the sounds of sitar lead off into an Om-like transcendence, essentially heralding the arrival of a new stage in "The Unveiling"'s epic journey, or the start of another song if your mind simply cannot handle the thought of a 43-minute tune.

With these world influences WAF expertly embed them back into the cavernous doom when the time again calls in a manner one does not hear so often as most proponents of folky-metal simple bodge the two sounds together without thoughts of collaboration; not here though. Our opener, having introduced plenty of clean vocals to contrast with the earlier deep bellows closes in more doomed fashion as it leads to the 34-minute "Neo Genesis", a song less dramatic though darker through it's more willing deployment of gentle synth early in the song as it sets the scene for periods of sparse piano-led interludes and vocal chanting, all bound together by the crashing heavy riffs, let's not forget. Despite the gargantuan lengths of both songs on "The Unveiling" the excellent composition revealed in the slowly unfolding chapters in the duo of songs makes for a listen that drifts past quicker than would be expected. Never in a million years will music this extreme in nature garner a large-scale following but for those who like to vary their speeds right down to the bottom I must recommend this. at the end of each year we have the tendency to make a balance of what occurred and what will be. it is something that concerns cycles, life and the perpetuous movement of being:

I) we would like to take this paragraph to thank everybody who supported the Unveiling sessions since they began until they ended on the last 30th of November. everybody would worked on it, all who bought it, went to concerts, got photographs and reviewed the work with such galant words. a special thanks to Daniel at Bubonic, Shattered Hope and all the cool greek people we met for spreading the shadow gospels of "The Unveiling", Officium Triste, Brigantia and Mark Leigh at Dublin, Biolence, Carlos at Side B and everyone at SWR INC.

II) on the last concert as a way of promoting attendance we reprinted a very limited special edition of "..to the Sun" but still we were left with quite a few that were not sold, so we will be doing that to everyone interested. this edition contains the full audio release plus a dvd of a kvlt live performance back in 2005 @ Lótus Bar.
III) after the last concert in Side B we are now starting pre-production of the new work. and here are already presented multiple paths: we will be taking advantage of some outtakes that did not fit onto the Unveiling sessions; the format of the next release is still what is under serious considerations - one full lenght with shorter songs or the option of going to something extreme in lenght with the four parts of the album being released in four mcd's.

what is set for now is the concept of the new work and title. it will be focused on the four canonical gospel texts: the author, the nuances of each of them, their unique seing of Christ. the title we chosen is "The Four Living Creatures". if everything goes according to plan we will be entering studio next summer. we will be sharing details and thoughts on the new work as it advances.
