"Whether this first non-demo release by Portugal’s Midnight Priest is an ep or a full length (it clocks in just under half an hour) might be arguable, but their influences certainly are not. Early eighties twin guitar metal, Iron Maiden predominantly, but Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy and Mercyful Fate a bit also, are proudly flown flags of influence. From the galloping rhythm to the twin guitar harmonies to the alternating solos, the opening title track just bleeds DiAnno era Maiden. The hero worship aspect is not really avoidable because of how close this is to its influences, but I have a feeling the band have no problem with that and it is so well done, it is more than forgivable. “Juizo Final” continues the rousing tribute to the glory days of yore. The band also site English Dogs as an influence and a bit of that bands metal period influence can be heard in sections of this.

None of the individual instruments are going to knock your socks off, but they are all well played and together form a metallic energy and spirit that is definitely more than the sum of its parts. If you grew up loving Maiden, Priest, Fate and Lizzy you really can’t help but enjoy this immensely. If Portuguese was my language, I would fucking be going nuts to this (I nearly am anyway). “Lenda Viva” is the longest track here, it handles its seven plus minute length well and probably even more so if you understand the lyrics. It has that “telling a story” feel. It also brings in a bit more of an element of originality without ceasing the homage to the past.

The whole album is quite well written and well executed. There are sections that are damn near metal grave robbing, but that is not exactly contrary to the spirit here. There are really no bad tracks. “Numa Campa De Cristal” suffers from a couple of awkward transitions, but more than redeems itself through its rousing head-banging spirit. “Armada Da Noite” kicks the tempo up a notch and brings the English Dogs influence to the forefront. Closer “O Conde” begins moody and smoldering before kicking into twin guitar fueled metal hysteria.

Not just the music, but the production and the cover art (which is perfect for this, it walks right up to the face of cliché and cheesiness and punches it out) are so spot on true to the past, that minus the CD format, you could easily believe this was actually released in the mid-eighties. Here’s hoping there is more to come from this band, this kind of stuff has not been done this well since Powervice flamed out before reaching the after demo stage.
Immensely enjoyable for any nostalgic metal head, give this a chance…you’ll be glad you did."

Uma vez que o tópico relativo Às criticas continua bloqueado aproveito este para divulgar algumas reviews que fomos vendo/recebendo. A primeira vem do blog Heavy Metal Time Machine (USA)

"I put the album title from Portugual's Midnight Priest into Babelfish and it came up as "Queen of the black magic". That makes sense as the cover would go along with that title. This album is sung entirely in Portuguese which was a little startling at first, but I quickly got into where this band was coming from. They wear their influences on their sleeve and they have an obvious love for early Iron Maiden, Judas Prest, Mercyful Fate, Saxon, Thin Lizzy and a few other NWOBHM acts. The album clocks at just under half an hour so all of the songs are relatively brief, but they cut to the chase and get immediately into the meat of each song. Okay it's not that original, but it's still very well played. They how to create and maintain some fantastic duel guitar attacks, the vocals are rough and help build up the intensity of each song. The production values are tight and boost this album right away. This is a celebration of early-mid 80's classic style metal and all that was good about it. If someone had told me this was a lost classic from 1984 rather a release from 2009 then I would have been inclined to believe the, However that doesn't diminish the fact that this is an exciting venture into classic metal. To their credit Midnight Priest do manage to mix their influences on a few songs and the results are impressive. It would be great to see the band do more of that and try to expand on what they began here. Certainly a release that is going to appeal to old style metal fans."

"Midnight Priest es una banda de puro Heavy Metal, heredera del sonido de la NWOBHM, oriunda de Coimbra, Portugal. Se formaron en 2008 y un año después grabaron su primera demo “The Priest Is Back”. Sin mucha demora, y con el respaldo de Stormspell Records, dan su primer puñetazo serio en la mesa con un EP de seis temas bautizado como “Rainha Da Magia Negra”.

Los componentes son The Priest (voz), Pita "Iron Fist" Commander (guitarra), Rod Wolf (guitarra), Joe "Murderface" Dalton (bajo) y Alex "War Tank" Animal (batería).

Resulta llamativo que, pese a que el nombre del grupo sea inglés y los apodos de los componentes respondan asimismo a vocablos anglosajones, este combo luso utilice íntegramente su lengua vernácula como vía de expresión musical.
Lo primero en lo que nos fijamos es en la portada: espléndida. Me recuerda a las de Cirith Ungol por la técnica de dibujo, así como esa temática fantástica. Pero lo definitivamente atrayente es su música.

Seis temas sin altibajo alguno. Arrancamos con “Rainha Da Magia Negra”, en la que sus ‘galopantes’ melodías y el tratamiento de las guitarras desvelan que Iron Maiden es una de las influencias más destacadas en la música de los portugueses. Esa línea sonora continúa con “Juizo Final”, donde mixturan a los primeros Maiden con Mercyful Fate, cuidando bien las melodías.

“Lenda Viva” es el más largo del disco. Musicalmente, sigue pautas parecidas. En sus comienzos consiguen recrear la atmósfera que Mercyful Fate dotaba a sus composiciones, elucubrando un tema más místico y menos directo que los dos anteriores. Tiene fases con un trabajo vocal menos melodioso, no obstante intenta imbuirnos en la historia que nos cuenta la canción. Otro gran tema.

“Numa Campa De Cristal” se suma al conjunto de temas del EP destacando por unas melodías guitarreras más pegajosas. “Armada Da Noite” es más rápida, más potente, puro metal enfundado en el espíritu de Midnigh Priest , mientras que el broche final lo ponen con “O Conde”, con una gran carga instrumental en el principio y reminiscencias obvias de la NWOBHM durante todo el discurrir de la canción.

Definitivamente, el sonido de Midnight Priest encuentra su origen en la NWOBHM. Las armonías de guitarras son muy Iron Maiden, pero los Maiden de Paul Di ‘Anno. Esa oscuridad que encierra a la temática ocultista de sus canciones casa con el sonido de Mercyful Fate e incluso Angel Witch. Todo esto y un poco de los viejos Judas Priest, configuran la propuesta de esta banda sensacional de Heavy Metal.

La producción es buena. De todos modos, podría estar un poco más lograda, es cierto, pero eso no le va a quitar méritos a una banda que tiene un muy claras sus intenciones, su modo de componer y el camino por el que guiar los pasos de su música. Y de verdad creo que si eligieran el idioma de Shakespeare para sus letras encontrarían más puertas abiertas. Este grupo está de puta madre.

Running Wild!!! That was the first thing that popped in my head when I this record burst out of my speakers with the title track for the first time. The riffs, melodies and the overall guitar sound strongly reminds of the German legends and - despite the strong comparison - that gave me a great feeling.

On this mini these Portuguese approach tasty old-fashioned heavy metal, straight from the eighties. The band does not only appeal to the eighties Running Wild efforts, but also gets its inspiration from Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Raven, Angel Witch, Helstar and countless other N.W.O.B.H.M. bands from that era, combined with an overload on epic metal bands. Of course the influences of Manilla Road are almost unavoidable, which also results in the comparison with more recent bands like the magnificent Wotan, Doomsword and fellow countrymen Ironsword! Having all the lyrics in Portuguese gives the music a certain charm, even though I haven’t got a clue what they actually say! Thereby the band also distinguishes itself from the many colleague bands within this genre. That what remains is a six-pack of pure and variable, easy-listening (due to the music’s simple character) epic heavy metal! Fans of the genre can certainly celebrate the arrival of the Midnight Priest. But note that this album is limited to only one thousand copies!
