For a heavy metal band to "mature and progress" without losing essential elements (usually heaviness and credibility) is not a usual occurrence. For a heavy metal band to step completely out from the shadow of their influences and stand proud and independent has become a rare commodity indeed since the 80's. The Gates of Slumber have accomplished both. Gone is the absolutely raw unadorned and unwavering doom of the early demos, but in it's place stands a mighty hybrid of doom metal and epic true metal with the strengths of both musical fathers. With full honor given to their influences (very directly honored, check the liner notes), and as worthy as it is to stand in the land of shadows cast by Sabbath, Manilla Road, Maiden, Motorhead, St. Vitus etc., The Gates of Slumber have stepped up to a level closer to peer than disciple. Heavy statement? No doubt. Heavy fucking album that earned it!

Twenty-odd seconds of intro and bam an up tempo riff like the bastard son of Manilla Road and Maiden jamming on Sabbath's (yes they've out grown the shadows, but how else can I attempt to convey the iron symphony on offer?) equipment over a thundering and crushingly tight rhythm section. Vocals like Scott Reagers possessing Lemmy carry an classic true metal melody line like Manilla Road, Maiden and Cirith Ungol in a blender. Put it all together and it really doesn't call any of those bands to mind directly, it couldn't be anyone but The Gates of Slumber and it's nothing short of an immensely well written song. Next up is the bruising doom pummeling of the title track, one of those songs that just epitomizes doom (think Vitus's "Burial at Sea"). As on all the tracks here the production is awesome. The guitars maim and smite, the bass bludgeons and rolls and the drums hammer and pound, the vocals carry the epic tale of Kull with depth, clarity and passion and it's all perfectly balanced in the mix. Once more an amazingly well written song.

I could go on and on, track by track for the hour plus duration of the eight tracks and the notation of stellar song writing, heaviness and top shelf musical performances would not waver. Equally devastating no matter what the tempo (and quite a pleasing mixture of tempos and transitions between are on offer here, just check "Ice Worm" for instance). Karl Simon's guitar work excels equally whether riffing or soloing (just lend an ear to "To Kill and be King" where the soloing just rips it up perfectly and in wickedly tight union with the music). It's brutality wielded deftly and his vocal performance is outstanding and well varied to fit the songs. Jason McCash's bass work is the stuff that legend is made of, I don't feel that I am at all out on a limb to say he is one of doom's finest bass players. Iron Bob Fouts nails it all down and is just who The Gates of Slumber needed behind the kit, the perfect thunder for the perfect storm.

Deserving individual mention as songs are (well fuck all of them are, but I'm choosing these two) "Children of Satan" a galloping beast of an indictment of the world's silence on Darfur that sticks in your mind like no one's business, not in a bubble gum pop kind of sticky catchy, but rather like a well swung mace lodged in your skull kind of sticky and "Dark Valley Suite" an epic powerful, dark, multi-sectioned tribute to saga master Robert E. Howard, including an ominous and heartfelt recitation of Howard's Lines "Written in the Knowledge that I Must Die".

Conqueror's predecessor Suffer No Guilt was an immense album that I loved deeply and worried that they would not be able to keep up to the standard of. I need not have worried. The Gates of Slumber are on one of those runs like Manilla Road, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Sabbath and Maiden all had in their primes. We all might have our favorite album from that period, but no real metal head could ever argue that it wasn't one album that slayed after another. If I counted the best metal bands going right now on my fingers The Gates of Slumber would definitely claim a digit. Buy this album and listen to it over and over again, if you're not head banging and grinning like a madman you're not metal... period.

A lot of bands have attempted to tread the roads of the past in heavy music the last decade or so. Some have succeeded in returning with some fresh takes on what they found, others found they could harness nothing but pale imitations of the God’s of the past. Hour of 13 walks the dark side roads of that past and brings back something at once familiar and unique. I’ve heard both 70's and 80's era Pentagram and Pagan Altar used as reference points, and while those do serve as good representatives of the nature of the territory covered by Hour of 13, to my ears they sound more like Count Raven crossed with a darker and heavier Sheavy. This is heavy and seriously dark in a sort of timeless fashion. From the music to the lyrics to the artwork, this could readily be believed to be from the 70's or 80's.

Opener “Call To Satan” sets the sacrificial table in no uncertain terms. Countless hordes of heavy bands have tried the darkness and evil deal, but there is something bone chillingly impactful about Hour of 13's auditory descent into the shadowed and bloodied lands. The lyrics do not stray far from the darkly unbalanced end of the occult (with “Missing Girl” in particular being outright disturbing) and the creepy/mournful melodies are brought down musically like Poe’s pendulum. The vibe of doom, loneliness and depravity is palpable and woven into the riffs in a difficult to define way broader than just heaviness (though that too is in abundance). The overall sound musically incorporates doom, traditional metal and 70's hard rock and manages an oppressive presentation despite being fairly sparse in nature. Hour of 13 definitely knows what not to do as well as what to do. Overplaying or additions would have just cluttered and obscured the power on offer.

There are no real standout tracks to my ears, due not to a lack of song writing talent but rather due to consistency and cohesion. This one really holds together as a complete work, not just a collection of songs by the same band. An amazing debut that I won’t call promising for the promise is already being delivered, but rather whets the appetite of lovers of the dark and heavy for a long career by these guys.

Uma crítica ao album ENERGY VAMPIRES - s/r (2008) feito pelo blog Steel On The Battlefield (ver uns posts mais acima pelo post do album e condições)

Now, what can I say for this masterpiece? It blew me away from the first listening. Perfect work with the tracks, the lyrics, and the atmospheric cover! And the breath-taking fotos, along with the stunning interview of John Stewart is another factor that raises this anthem to the top!

Well, ok I must confess that I adore Slauter Xstroyes, and everything related to them is just another challenge for me, but THIS is beyond my expectation! The sound of the tracks is so powerful and solid, that makes you push the play button again and again! I just can’t help it, ti happens automatically! Packin’ A Pistol is another powerful song, that captivates the listener from the begining, after its weird intro, the guitar invasion is strooong. John’s wild Battle cry don’t give us another choice, while the drums pounding our brains, and unstopable headbanging is mandatory!

Blood Money, and the holocaust goes on and on! Strong bass invasion, and merciless riff war feeds the lunacy, that bring forth those insane screams! Paranoia and harmony, powerful chords and up-tempo attitude, melodius and agressive sounds devastate my existence, and I wish it’ll last forever!
The use of keys and saxophone is distinctive, adding a mystic, eerie and atmospheric shade on the main character of the songs, Joh’s voice on My Eyes is dreamy, as simple as that, both in the acoustic and in the Piano versions! He’s Godly!

The Battle Axe is ripping our eardrums for one more time, better than ever, provoking the desire to state that Metal’s No Sin, Dignified Desaster, Syncopated Angel, Mass Confusion(!!), etc should be included in that CD also! Moreover, Mother Fucker is another strong asset, with plentiful feeling, and devastating sound, which reminds us how much we would desire other anthems such as City Of Cirtel, The Stage, No Idea, Winterkill, etc to be also included in that CD! Hehe, I demand too much, I know it, but when it comes up for Slauter Xstroyes, I become dangerous greedy!

Crystal, powerful sound, insane screams and razor blade guitars that pierce our brain, what more could we ask? The frantic screams on Footsteps In The Snow make me shiver, while the fast and rapid solos on Pull The Stake Out reveal the Wrath of the Ressurected Beast! Nothing stands on their way! Dull feeling in the air, with grey tones, followed by the strong accompaniment of the drums! While the powerful Living In Peace nail us to the ground!

Quick, forceful attitude, up tempo tunes, and immense solos bring back memories, while the pleasant keys give another dark stroke of the brush upon their red-blood canvas!
Through dreaming turnings and changes, John gives his best! I just THANK Shadow Kingdom for this release! I can’t wait till I will hold in my hands the vinyl. This release fills my head with hopes and expectations!
The bone-crushing interview with John, by Laurent Ramadier is another bonus! This man speaks without fear for everything, giving his own, unique direction to his answers! I adore him!

Also, the CD cover is awesome, and representative! Dark and gloomy drawing that gets us right into the point, I like it a lot! The unbelievable fotos that are included inside the CD make me scream for more! The atmosphere that Energy Vampires create is unique, they preserve this Horror Feeling, keeping their music untouched and strictly devoted to the spirit of the 80ies. Yes, I can see a deep devotion here, beyond the immense problems, I can see their Vision, and comprehend their attitude, but that’s not easy, their music is not easy at all! Someone must see carefully, beyond what’s obvious, to dig deep and reveal their way of thinking.

It’s so simple and complicated at the same time. Their music grows inside with each listening. It’s a pleasant procedure, that completes the magical journey and redeems the mind. This is a real challenge for those who seek quality in their lives, this is what I call ART! What an awesome release, I’m speechless! Sometimes words are not enough, I’ll let Metal do the talking anyway! This is the resurrection of a Legend, a continuation of our Metal Dreams, and a BUY OR DIE release!

And that’s not another promotional message, this is the Truth, there’s not other way, you can’t avoid the inevitable, if you have IT in your Blood! Arghhh!!
