Here comes Satan. So if your going to listen to Gorgoroth you better be into the idea, because that’s all that fuels this nefarious act. Although I haven’t heard any of Gorgoroth’s previous work, I am fully aware of this bands intentions and what “Satan” is to them. For one to be able to embrace any of this bands music, they must first understand the ideals behind Gorgoroth. Satan is freedom, Satan is power, and Satan is exactly the opposite of what you may perceive. But yet, Gorgoroth’s delivery of Satan through music is as evil and damnable as anything you can imagine. That’s exactly the idea behind black metal though. Scare the living shit out of everyone who doesn’t get it and leave the enemy offended, cowering, and beaten.
The Norwegian black metal scene has quiet a tremendous history to it already and it is Norway’s biggest cultural export. Gorgoroth, for those who don’t know, are a key band. With all members in jail at the moment except one, this band has been on top of Norway’s sleazeball list for sometime now. Lead vocalist Gaal has been pronounced legally insane by the country of Norway, and therefore cannot work. Needless to say, this act is the poster child for controversy at the moment. So when it comes to the new CD Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam, delivered in a timely fashion considering, it shows just how dedicated of musicians Gorgoroth has.
The music itself is pretty different from most black metal. Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam isn’t fast and as razor sharp as most music in the genre. Gorgoroth take a slower doom-laden death metal approach with tones of atmosphere and droning evil as hell chords. The drums are a very brutal part of this record. So brutal that the production I feel makes them to muffled and creates a wall of noise over the music. That’s probably the intension anyway. Double bass pounds furiously and yes even the cliché blast beats are thrown in to satisfy the black metal hunger. Gaal’s voice is semi-hidden under the wall of sound as he growls and shrieks like a demon waiting to be unleashed upon the mortal world. Lyrically we know what to expect here. Tales of damning Christianity and social issues, which follow in the same path considering the way Norway is run, completely by Judeo-Christianity.
The production is good for a black metal record. The sound is raw but not like the buzz saw black metal guitar tone. The tone is definitely more death metal oriented. The thing that makes this band so damn great is the way they construct their music. It isn’t real technical but the chords are monstrous. There are some breakdowns, which hold some technical aspects to them.
If you’re a Gorgoroth fan you know what to expect here. Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam is a great record and for me it shed a little light on something different in a genre I normally do not visit. Just remember why the boys in Gorgoroth play the music they play and support church burnings.
