Drone metal, also known as drone doom, is a subgenre of doom metal that takes the heaviness and slowness of its progenitor to a new extreme. The music consists mainly of distorted down tuned guitars and bass with rare clear (melodic) themes.
One of the most prominent drone bands, Sunn O))), play very, very slow, minimalist bass riffs without drums.

Sunn O))) is an American doom/drone metal band consisting of Stephen O'Malley (Khanate, Burning Witch) and Greg Anderson (Goatsnake). The band was formed as a tribute to Earth, another very heavy band, and is named after a make of amplifier. Their sound is extremely slow and heavy, using droning guitars accompanied by feedback and other sound effects to create soundscapes. There is very little drumming and a lack of any discernable beat. When playing live the band wear long hooded cloaks.
The band have notably collaborated with a wide variety of artists. Merzbow, known as the Japanese 'God of Noise', worked with the band on the album Flight of the Behemoth. Julian Cope worked on a song from the White1 album, and Attila Csihar, best known for his vocal work on the classic black metal album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem, did vocals for the song "Decay2 [Nihil's Maw]" on the album White2.
The band are currently signed to influential doom label Southern Lord.

Pushing all the boundries of heaviness and slowness (far beyond anything done by Funeral Doom) creating "droning sounds" that are perhaps best described as the force of extreme gravity become music or the movement of tectonic plates deep in the earth's crust. Definatly no melody, but still Black Sabbath influenced. Often relying heavily on feedback and sometimes lacking vocals or even a rythem section.
Examples: Earth, SUNN 0))), Khanate.
