Os nacionais Ironsword estão de volta aos lançamentos, este novo "Overlords Of Chaos" é o seguimento óbvio dos anteriores registos. Quer me parecer, um álbum mais trabalhado e consegue transmitir na perfeição aquela aura Heavy Metal. Continuam bem fiéis às raízes, a conjugar elementos do passado com abordagens mais recentes. Mas sempre fiéis ao estilo base!

Ironsword have been one of the brighter lights of the underground true metal scene since Miskatonic cast their self titled debut album into the fray in 2002. Two years later an extremely strong sophomore effort Return of the Warrior, also on Miskatonic, added fuel to the fire. So now Shadow Kingdom sets to unleash Ironsword’s long awaited third album and before it even hits the streets the ante is up. Even using the name Manilla Road in your press for your new release is a fairly ballsy move. To claim the closest sound to them requires a huge set of brass ones indeed. Well either that or just really healthy dollops of respect for yourself and Manilla Road… maybe a combination of the two.

“Death of the Gods” indeed pays no little homage to mid 80’s Manilla Road (and you’ll find Mark “The Shark” Shelton on backing vocals for three of the tracks here). Not a copy mind you, no lifted riffs or stolen melodies here, but rather melody lines treading similar territory in a rougher and deeper fashion. Brash, heavy, genuine, epic metal purity is a true joy for any headbanger to behold and this song sets the stage for a nearly hour long barrage of exactly that. Following is “ An Ending in Fire” which has about as perfect an example of a heavy epic and tremendously catchy chorus as you could want to hear coupled with stellar guitar work in both the riff and solo department, pounding and rolling drums and thundering bass all supported by a songwriting framework that is first class. This one is not only one of my favorites on the album, but from Ironsword in their career.

Next up is the title track which continues the ability to embed serious hooks in an extremely traditional heavy metal framework and they just grab you harder as listens repeat. One of the strengths of this album is that while most songs with great hooks and catchy chorus’ hit you the hardest when you first hear them, the ones here grow on you like iron fungi. Another is that the tracks exceeding 5 minutes seem like they’re about three minutes and those under four seem incredibly short. The lyrical content on this album should please any true metal head, warriors, Gods, lost lands of mystery, Howard, Lovecraft, blood, death, triumph and glory…given the epic and pummeling nature of the music it’s a seamless and perfect fit.

Following the title track, “Blood and Honor” and “Cimmeria” continue the cult metal onslaught in the established feel of the album until “Wrath of Crom” injects an almost punk like sense of urgency and immediacy into the proceedings. “Hyperborean Hordes” hauls everything back into the land of pure head banging metal where it stays through “Road Warriors”. “Fear The Night” then kicks up the pace significantly without sacrificing an iota of metal purity. A great demonstration of the breadth of talents Ironsword bring to the table, the guitars showing the ability weave intricate and speedy thrash like riffs as well as the skull crushingly heavy and powerfully melodic ones that dominate the remainder of this album, the drums and bass showing as much strength in the neck snapping pace here as on the more oft heard mid-paced pounding. It is truly astounding how many back to back killer songs Ironsword has been able to craft onto this disc. An hour long album is most often at least slightly hampered by noticeably weaker tracks, but not this one. The quality simply varies from very good to outright great.

“Dark Shadows of Stygia”, “Crown of Iron” and “Call of Cthulhu” continue the onslaught before closer “The Pyre of Kings” wraps it all up with an acoustic dominated requiem, well fitted to the spirit of the heavier offerings preceding it. An extremely high caliber heavy metal album, Overlords of Chaos should, and with any justice will be, referred to as a classic by future metal generations. There are just a ton of moments on this that bring in full force everything I love about metal.

I know there might be some out there by now that are saying… wow, is this guy objective? He seems to really love almost every album he reviews… to put that in perspective, I’ll tell you that I usually only take the time to review the albums I really love. So yes, at the end of this year, you will probably see most of the albums that I review in my top ten and I fully expect Ironsword’s Overlords of Chaos to be in it. I’ll also tell you another thing; this is turning out to be a particularly incredible year for metal indeed. I can’t remember the last time I had so many albums that I could just play over and over and just appreciate more and more with repeated listens. Overlords of Chaos is one of those.

Não tenho muitas palavras para descrever este álbum... Já é um clássico no Heavy nacional. Que malhas! Os álbuns anteriores estão bons, mas este transpira mais trabalho... e inspiração! O melhor do ano no que vai de ano! Esperemos que mais bandas nacionais publiquem os seus trabalhos e levem o Heavy a mais gente!

Ver esta banda em portugal é difiicil, bem gostava de ver, têm maior projecçao lá fora.

Este ultimo trabalho é muito bom e só demonstra a qualidade da banda que desde já é bem conhecida.

Este novo album, já o terceiro da banda, é ENORME! Os adjectivos não chegam para o classificar. Para quem não conhece, está na hora de procurar, porque este trabalho é sem dúvida um dos melhores do ano de 2008.
