Yakuza was formed in 1999 by the Chicago quartet of instrumentalists Jim Staffel, Eric Plonka, Bruce Lamont and Eric Clark. Using unusual instruments like the saxophone and clarinet, and incorporating free jazz, world music, and psychedelic music, the band debuted with its independently-released album Amount to Nothing in 2001. The album was met with acclaim from Terrorizer and the Chicago Sun Times. Yakuza followed its release with a tour alongside Candiria and Burnt by the Sun, eventually leading to a slot on the popular Vans Warped Tour.

Such exposure led to a record contract and the release of their second album, Way of the Dead, through Century Media Records in 2002. . Yakuza then shared the stage with like-minded metal bands Opeth, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Mastodon. Jazz titan Ken Vandermark guests on the record (A one time live performance from 2002 is on YouTube) While the band received critical acclaim the record failed to meet sales expectations.Way of the Dead was to be the only Century Media release.In 2005, the band signed with Prosthetic Records and in 2006 "Samsara" was released.

Samsara was Recorded by Matt Bayles (Isis, Botch, Pearl Jam) at Volume Studios in Chicago. Yakuza enlisted a wide variety of musical guests on Samsara, including pianist Jim Baker, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, Sanford Parker, and Mastodon’s Troy Sanders.


IN 2007 yakuza released Transmutations. The album sees YAKUZA again pushing the aural boundaries further albeit in a different way, incorporating more psychedelic elements alongside stretching, doomy movements and the band’s trademark jazz-influences, while also incorporating breakneck grind riffs and grooves at the same time.


World renowned jazz percussionists Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang guest on "Transmutations". An amazing occurrence considering the two rarely play together except once a year during their annual "Winter Solstice Performances" in Chicago.

Adorei o primeiro album deles, e depois nunca mais procurei o resto, mas agora que vi boas criticas aos seguintes, provavelmente vou fazer um search.

Eu gosto mais do Samsara, é mais pesado e directo, mas muito bem estruturado.

O Transmutations é mais progressivo e experimental, nao foi um album que entrou facil mas gostei bastante, alias é um daqueles albuns que sei que vou ter que voltar a ouvir em breve.

Estes gajos lançaram mais um álbum fantástico e ninguém fala neles,lol, que grande banda, estão ai para durar e para continuar a lançar grandes bombas, este Beyul se não é o melhor álbum deles anda lá muito perto!!!
