aNgreNOST sign with code666 and release new album

Imagem

aNgreNOST - a black metal band from Portugal – has signed a multi album
contract with Aural Music imprint Code666.
Angrenost’s debut album titled “Planet Muscaria”, due for release in late
September 2013, is pure, hateful and self-destructive undead Black Metal.
A genuine and desperate scream of venomous un-life, sucked into a very bad
trip to the Gates of Hell and beyond.
aNgreNOST was formed in 1995 by Pursan and Ainvar (Sirius).
The only release by the band was the EP “Evil”, released on mcd by
Andromeda Creations (Portugal) in 1997, which was very well received by
the public.
After this release, in 1998, due to all-kind of extreme auto-destructive behaviors,
Pursan collapses and leaves the band.
12 years later Pursan re-activates aNgreNOST, this time without Ainvar
and with 2 new members: Erdsaf and E. (Wavelength:Satan).
The concept of aNgreNOST and PLANET MUSCARIA are entwined.
It is the raw testimony of someone who took the human condition to its most
extreme state: dark, miserable self-destructive… and survived. Intravenous
overdoses, psychotic outbreaks, NDEs and bad trips. Detox clinics, psychiatric
asylums, hospitals and police stations. Addiction and extreme abuse of hard
drugs and hallucinogens. aNgreNOST is not about fantasies or poetry.
It’s real, and PLANET MUSCARIA is the mirror of these experiences.
Black Metal in its most pure and genuine form.

Angrenost - Planet muscaria
Code666 Records, 2013

Angrenost is a Portuguese black metal project that actually has been around since the 90s. The men in question have after their demo Evil however decided to insert a break of ten years and since 2010, the band in question is active again. With Planet muscaria the band delivers its first full length, and which will be placed. immediately Code 666 That promises!

The style of Angrenost is clear or anything else. The band works with programmed drums, but that does not say that this band would bring no change and makes it easy themselves. muscaria Planet takes you through an hour of dust which sounds quite similar, but that you also ended up in a constant drive . Oldschool black metal loaded with power chords and a thunderous sound on the one hand, but also a symphonic obscurity on the other side. Here and there pretty ambient tinted, but without the band really matures in empty moments. Sometimes it is the enigmatic calm before the storm that does it, sometimes the qualitative strip layers or slick interludes, but actually it's the album as a whole that appeals to the hazy atmosphere that is mainly achieved through the epic and bombastic work of synths . In addition, a variety of oldschool vocal filth (think old Ad Hominem ) and atmospheric dust voice over what this stuff actually does nothing bored and quite unique stamp number.

No negatives? With me sometimes dares something to sound too programmed and this pressure or constant thrust you have to lie, because the breathing spaces that this Portuguese happy to provide you are of very short duration, except perhaps ScOrpIOSaUrUS that proper Dimmu Borgir -tinged interlude supplies . Expected for the rest constant grind through symphonic obscurity and a strong atmospheric story.

So to our Portuguese cosmic black metal band. This is actually their debut album despite a nineties formation date, an EP ‘Evil’ and then time interrupted by a long layoff due to internal self-destruction. All goodv inspiration it seems, proven by being picked up by Code666 to boot. Which means at the very least we expect competence and class and from the first few seconds that much is plainly there.

Angrenost have a dark, glistening, modern sound neatly plucked out by the production. There are keyboards aplenty here, swirling the sounds of a particularly unforgiving, cavernous cosmos in a very Event Horizon way: Hollow, echoing passages with harsh metal clanking and babbling, preaching voices, passages of calm and obsessive, hissing vocals dripping poison and insanity in your ear. At its heart though is a driving, orthodox black metal sound but one mutated by these cloaking devices. Bits of early Limbonic Art chained and dragged into a modern sound close to some of the French circle. Rasped and snarled vocals placed well in the mix to allow them command of the sound when needed, blasting drums pushing the wall of guitar noise. Orthodox.

However the way the keyboard and samples infect the sound is what brings texture and colour to Planet Muscaria. I do think it’s fair to say that you may find a bit of the Deathspell Omega and Blut Aus Nord approach herein, but it isn’t a suffocating presence. More a stepping off point as Angrenost produce music that is less experimental or avant-garde than those two but is definitely idiosyncratic in an intriguing and compelling way. Noise rises on drum and guitar to peaks, disembodied voices chime in, the music drops away and we plummet deeper into the abyssal rift of the album to be snagged by the weird, nattering and gnawing soundscapes until their damage is done and again we plunge. Despite being separated into eleven parts, this is very much an album to be taken as a whole, a piece with plunging movements and the clattering wrongness of the samples and the plateaus of the more straightforward blasts. At times wonderfully, malevolently chaotic and nihilistic, at others just a surging flow. If the more traditional blasting sometimes dulls the ears, there is no cause for concern as this system will soon fling dark matter at you, knocking you off balance and regaining the interest and edge of fear.

Sometimes you don’t know if you are falling or being sucked down into the maw at the bottom of this dimensional horror, but the direction of travel is as unmistakable as it is inescapable. It is really quite a surprise of an album as despite my reservations at the more ‘normal’ aspects, Planet Muscaria is bristling with as many malignant, black spikes as any glance into a Cenobite’s hell cold hope to bring.

Dark, nasty, off kilter and at times downright weird. Got to be worth any black metal fan looking into this abyss. And it might indeed look back.

Review: aNgreNOST's upcoming album "Planet Muscaria"

Portuguese Black Metal band aNgreNOST are scheduled to release a new album on the 23rd of September called Planet Muscaria, through Code666.
Hateful and Self-Destructive undead Black Metal, that is how they are described. In fact, it is a very furious, angry and full of hate music.
The album has nine tracks, all of them very emotional, very powerful, everything is perfect in there, there is nothing out of place in any of the songs. Really one of the best albums of 2013 for Lachryma Christi, so good it is even hard to describe in words.

For those who are not familiar with the name aNgreNOST, the band was formed in 1995. Before this album they had released a EP only, called Evil, back in 1997... In 1998 Pursan left the band due to all the auto destruction. But it is never late, and it is really good that Pursan reactivated the band after such a long time. Still, the concept of aNgreNOST and Planet Muscaria is something like the testimony of someone who went through the extremest states a human been can go and survive. Meaning stuff like hard drugs overdoses, hospitals, mental asylums and so on. Very interesting concept, and very good way to share and especially to express it. This is really good, amazing, majestic!

So yeah, on the 23rd of September, do a favor to yourselves and get this album. It is full of dark melodies, great rhythms, really strong and great compositions. Honestly, this is perfection.

Angrenost is a lesser known band that has existed for many years, though not consecutively. Forged out of Portugal in 1995, this Black Metal group issued only one recording, a 1998 demo titled Evil, before disbanding shortly after. For the ten years (at least) that followed, this act lied dormant until it was reactivated in 2010. Since then, Angrenost has sustained itself as a three-piece astral group with some Industrial elements thrown in to give it a bit of a Science Fiction vibe, and has been picked up by Code666 Records for their long overdue debut album, Planet Muscaria. Given the long wait fans of the demo had to suffer, does this end up a release well worth the wait, or is this effort something that goes a bit too far with its themes?

“INferN(O)” acts as the album’s introduction, and while it has a bit of a Stanley Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey vibe, what epic elements are shadowed by an overburdeningly grim atmosphere, using some keyboards and further Industrial elements to feel as though a black hole were opening up, though the chain sound effects do kill it slightly. Planet Muscaria does push those Industrial elements pretty far, which causes it to sound Avant-Garde with the timing and shifts in and out of a sleek yet venomous Black Metal atmosphere, which shows itself during “acIdShIVa.” The start is normal enough, having some thick effects that make it seem as though you are spinning out of control in a great vastness, then giving it a break to move into some haunting keyboards before deeper distant clean chanting kicks in. But, about five and a half minutes in, you are given straight Industrial music in the background with deep altered narration layered over it, giving off an ominous vibe that acts more like a conceptual minute long bridge than actual padding. The pay out, however, is well worth it, as the song becomes richer and tighter, leading to some of the strongest music the performance has to offer, and one hell of an amount of closure.

“INTraVeNUS” is an immediate change of style. Where many tracks end up sharp and venomous with a sleek coating of space-age Science Fiction, this track is dark, cold, and brutal. The hint of venom and hatred in the performance is found in some spots, but overall the music just hammers away at the listener, pushed forward by the tight and furious clicks of double bass kicks that bring in a blunt edge to the mix. The Industrial elements are also a bit restricted, giving way to some early second wave frostbitten Black Metal that sounds superb with the distortion on the vocals and often haunting keyboards. Of course the intensity picks up, giving way to a more aggressive modern approach, even having deeper rasps with a different distortion that comes off rather eerie and intimidating. Around seven and a half minutes, there is a gap of silence with odd narration, but only for a few seconds before slipping into a bit of a symphonic Emperor-style closing. “SchIzOphObOS” throws back to that early second wave sound as well, and while it flows smoothly through the entire ten and a half minutes, it just isn’t as strong. The music is rather thin and ends up a bit hollow, even kind of bland in comparison to “INTraVeNUS,” or any other song here. It does have tighter moments where the pace picks up, but these are few and far between sadly, and not enough to really save it.

Imagem

“ajNagraMMaTON” is perhaps the most obvious of the Avant-Garde style performances, and one of the most abrasive. This is largely Industrial elements at work, finding extensive mechanical passages that weave a crushing tone, and some harsher vocals that appear from time to time. It’s a truly oppressive experience, even when the Black Metal performances slam right back in for short bouts of sharp aggression, captivating the listener with its distorted sense of reality the whole nine plus minutes. But, the cornerstone of Planet Muscaria is actually at the start of the instrumental “ScOrplOSaUrUS.” It’s an abrasive twist into the deepest, more despicable depths of the solar system complimented with crushing effects and altered voices. But, again, some of the chain sound effects kind of dull the bite. It also acts as the perfect introduction to the more serious “abSUMardUk.” The slower pace of the song and stylish keyboards compliment the harsh distortion of the vocals. The break in music about four minutes in helps helps give it a cold, desolate vibe before slamming back in with pent up rage and subtle symphonic keyboards for much of the remainder.

Planet Muscaria offers over an hour of solid music, most of it tethered together thanks to the mechanical effects, making it an opus that not only takes you to the darkest depths of the universe, but drops you off in the most distant crater with middle fingers raised high. If members of The Kovenant, Aborym, and even Emperor were to form an astral/Science Fiction themed Black Metal group, this is what that bastardized offspring would come out sounding like, and it’s a truly maddening experience. If you have never heard of Angrenost, which wouldn’t be too surprising if you’re outside of Portugal, then now is the time to check out what is one of the most promising debuts for a modern Black Metal group in recent years.

"(...) The lightning-fast acceleration, accompanied by keyboards to bend the straight line in space-time, are the moments in which Agrenost can really determine, the listener, a level of estrangement from reality comparable to the effect of any psychotropic substance. Just as the three derivatives dell'isoxazolo present in abundance nell'Amanita muscaria: ibotenic acid and muscimol muscazone. In the same "SaTaNlOgOS" , then, the black there is sometimes raw, increasing its load through dissonant riffs that, at least to the writer, reminiscent of Voivod. There is also to highlight the fact that songs entirely as ambient " ScOrpIOSaUrUS " have not been put there to swell the duration (considerable: an hour and three minutes) of the CD. On the contrary, it is as if it should contribute to the cause catalepsy neural overload, which is essential for the body to agree 'Agrenost' . The occlusion in this condition forced is the key to the narratives of Pursan get the upper hand on each mental endurance: "abSUMardUk" , with its endless surfaces designed by the keyboards, its dramatic, its up / mid-tempo, the His sudden accelerations astral (again, Emperor ...), identifies and materializes the musical maelstrom whose attraction, finally, is irresistible.
