Entrevista na Ancient Ceremonies #15 - já disponível para download em: http://www.ancientceremonies.com

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a band progressing and developing their sonority! This is exactly what happened to Portuguese IN THA UMBRA... once an obscure Death Metal band, now fusing 70s prog rock elements, broader vocal spectres (female voices included) and a dynamism not found earlier. “Thus Open Thine Eerie Wings Like An Eagle And Soar The Winds Of Chaos” is a record with so many details and such a step forward that we had an urge to talk with one of the founder members Bruno “BKD” Correia.
journalist: Simão Fonseca

It’s a cliché for many bands when they claim the new album “is the best we’ve done ever”. Does this apply to In Tha Umbra as well?

“Cliché or not, we truly believe in that statement. We thought this album very much, and we prepared it thoroughly, and believing as we believe that we are always evolving and maturing, it would be contradictory to think otherwise. We are now a much more mature band, better musicians, and better songwriters. Also we decided to work harder on the technical side of things, recording in a good studio with good conditions, and having someone with a good work done before to mix and do the mastering, so everything was aligned for this new work to be our best one until now. As much as we believe our next album will be better than this one.”

The overall production doesn’t sound satisfactory, just like on the previous material. Unless you want things to sound the way they do, what would be the reasons for this kind of poor production?

“Well, I guess the production in the new album is far better than any of our previous albums, and the mixing and mastering gave it a strong sound. The instruments are clear, the bass, which plays an important role is very present and audible, and as far as it goes, we've been getting quite some good opinions about the production and we're quite satisfied with it.”

“Thus Open Thine Eerie Wings Like An Eagle And Soar The Winds Of Chaos” was supposed to be entitled “Iä Kingu Xul”. What made you change your mind about the title?

“Well, I had the title “Ïa Kingu Xul” since we released “Nigrium Nigrius Nigro”, as I had some other titles. It had a concept, a more Sumerian/lovecraftian/middle eastern mythology thing, which is present in some of the lyrics in the album, but all of the sudden, one day, this sentence came to my head, and I was like “this has to be it”, and when overlooking the concept of our songs, the lyrics, the sound, and the artwork, it all fitted. Also, even being a longer title, I guess it is a tad more “epic” and wider in concept. I talked to the rest of the band, and as they leave the words and image to me, they agreed with the new title, and so we kept it.”

Dark influences...
Even though you play death metal, the album’s title drives the listener to black metal or other dark genres, and probably that has happened before with “Nigrium Nigrius Nigro”.

"Death Metal can be dark too, and our Death Metal has never been the typical one. Also we always admitted the Black Metal influence in our music... there are strong Black Metal elements in what we do, although we always called our music Death Metal. But there are also classic Heavy Metal and Thrash Metal slices to it. Anyway, even in our calmer moments, I guess the listener will agree that our music is eerie and dark.”

Your lyrics sound much like poetry. Generally, what are they about? And on “Thus Open…”?

“I guess our lyrics are the most complex element to explain about our identity. The best way I find to describe it, is that our lyrics are like an ornament to our music. There is no message, no story, more like a topic, a concept, an atmosphere. But that doesn't mean that our lyrics aren’t important, quite the opposite.
I spend quite a lot of time working, researching, reading, and I try to fit the words in what I believe is the concept of the band. It's like a blur line between darkness, light, death, night, mythology, phobia and folklore, and the words drift along these lines. In this album it's no different, and even trying to add something new for the next lyrics, the main road will be the same.”

The lyrics might get hard to memorize... do you see many people singing along during the gigs?

“I think never in our career we ever thought about that. I guess that's another one of those points where our “complex” element fits in... if anyone sings along, it's because that person is really really into what we are about. I guess that looking now on the big picture, there are a couple of moments in the album that are quite “singable”, but I think it would be odd to have people singing along to our music.”

Where do you get the inspiration from?

“From the same things that inspire the musical side... everything... what we like and what we don't like, our personal life’s, what we listen to, what we see. I can get inspiration from watching a movie or reading a book, but I can also get inspiration from watching the news or watching the cartoon channel. I think it is much too wide to try and label it.”

Layering new musical elements
It’s by far the softest thing you’ve ever done but at the same time it’s not the easiest listening on the market. Am I right?

“Not quite, as even if I agree we have the softest things we ever did in this album, we also have some of the most extreme things In Tha Umbra ever done. I guess it will be a grower to many people, because it has some elements that are much too “rockish” for metal people, and some elements are much too extreme for “rock” people. I believe we have managed to balance it nicely, so it doesn't sound like pieces glued together, but a one and only identity. I guess not being an easy listening album can be good also, as it gets more interesting, and it has some unexpected turns here and there, but on the other hand, it also has some simple, direct and, lets say it, easy listening elements in it. We strongly believe this is an album that people won't get tired of it swiftly.”

I believe it lacks some of the “grim” stuff from “Descend Supreme Sunset”. Anyway, I would never picture you guys playing this kind of rock parts but I like them a lot

“It's a whole new context, although the concept is the same. I think we still have the grimness very present in our music, even in the most melodic or soft parts. A song like “Slough Ov Capricorn” without changing a bit in the bass/guitar/vocals, but with faster drumming, blast beats and stuff, would perhaps sound quite eerie. Anyway, “Descend Supreme Sunset” was released 10 years ago. Something would be wrong if it didn't sound any different.”

The album cover and the band’s weak exposure won’t make you sell thousands of records, probably. Don’t you sometimes wish you had a bit more of popularity? I mean, you’ve been around since 1996 and, in my opinion, you’re still part of the underground...

“Well, I think that if we'd ever wanted to be the next big thing in popularity, we made the wrong choice in the style of music we chose to play. And even in the music we play, we never did things the easy way. We agree that this new album will be open to a wider audience, it's true, but it is, at the same time, as you said before, uneasy in some parts. We have our personal life’s and jobs, and although we still are ambitious towards our music, we know where we are, and we'd rather be liked for what we are and what we do, than changing ourselves in order to be popular. If this album will open some new doors for us, I believe we will still be underground. Of course we would like to go on regular tours and play big festivals and have a wider exposure, and sometimes we think we have worked for that, but it's no longer up to us, we do our part, we write and perform our art, and it pleases us.”

Would you quit your jobs if you had a deal with... say..Relapse, Metal Blade or Roadrunner?

“It depends. I think we would consider it, but not immediately. I believe we would wait a couple of months to see the ways things would evolve. We're not that young, and we have responsibilities, as family. Our drummer has recently become a father. We learnt to be patient. Making a living out of our music has always been a dream for us, and the kind of exposure a major label would give us, would also demand different things from us, but we would have to be in that position to know. There's no use in making predictions, because in reality everything is different.”

A major step forward
At some point of the album, I noticed some passages from the 70s rock, including some Yes melody. 13 years ago, had you picture yourselves playing this catchier sound, breaking the barriers of early blackened death metal from “Descend Supreme Sunset”?

“Perhaps no. But 13 years ago we already liked rock music, and artists like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, old Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Rush, Gentle Giant, and many others were among our favourite performers. These influences have always been with us, but now the time was right for a stronger presence, and also our abilities allowed we could take this step, without ever endangering our personality as a band, and we are proudly, still, a blackened Death Metal band, and we will still be in the future.”

Generally I liked a lot this new album, due to its musical transition. Do you wish to maintain this sound in the future?

“It will definitely be very much in this direction. We don't have new songs written yet, but we already have pieces, and a chosen direction... the rest of the work will flow naturally.
If I could anticipate and make a prediction about our future work, it will be darker, heavier, and in some parts be more extreme. Some faster parts, but also some mellow and soft parts. We will for sure explore some more our rock side, the use of retro keyboards, possibly not VST's as in “Thus Open...” but it is possible that we'll use a real Hammond organ and some other stuff. In Tha Umbra won't go shoe gazing, but we sure will experiment some more.”

It’s funny that extreme metal nowadays gets fused with prog rock and some non related genres quite easily; however there are still a lot of people who don’t accept anything but “traditional”. Do you believe old diehard In Tha Umbra fans will accept this musical direction?

“So far, people have liked the way we sound now, and I haven't yet heard many opinions about the new songs. The album is coming out and we will get the chance to play it live also. Perhaps because it's more easy listening on a more direct approach, people don't find it uncomfortable. Of course we respect who supports us, but this is how we are, what we are, what we sound. If anyone gets disappointed with our music, well, that's life. We can't please everybody... if we did, we would be headlining festivals and world tours and being praised. We're just regular people playing music the way we like it.”

In Tha Umbra’s main language is English, however “A Cornucópia Régia” is totally sung in Portuguese. Explain the non Portuguese speaking fans its lyrics, if you may!

“It was not the first time we used Portuguese words in our music, but it felt right for this song, and also the first song in the album, “Heonan Epiphainein” is mostly sung in Portuguese. The lyrics aren't, as with all our lyrics, a story, or have a definite meaning, but are based on Greek mythology, if I'm not mistaken, and it is a symbol of abundance. It is known in the English language as The Horn Of Plenty or Horn of Amalthea and Harvest Cone. It is depicted as a goat horn filled with fruits and flowers, and you can never empty it, for it is always blooming fruits and flowers. It is also known as a symbol for woman fertility. The lyrics of this song, more or less are about this subject.”

Is it easier for the band to write about myths rather than present situations?

“I don't think so. The lyrics take longer to write than the music, and it's quite a slow process. Sometimes I start writing and leave it alone for some months until I get ideas to continue. And it fits our imagery that our lyrics touch this kind of subjects, and the direction will be the same.”

Thanks a lot for your time and horns up for In Tha Umbra!

“We salute you for this interesting interview and the chance to explain some more about what I.T.U. is about, and we welcome everyone to open their wings and embrace our art!”

In Tha Umbra: Thus open thine eerie wings like an eagle and soar the winds of chaos
18/06/08 || The Abyss

From that hideous clusterfuck of an title you probably get the impression that In Tha umbra (“tha”? Jumpdafuckup?) are pretentious fuckers that play songs that are 200 minutes long and quote poets like Milton and Dante etc. The fact that they have seemingly changed all the “u” on their websites to “v” probably set off some huge fucking alarm bells in your head. And you know what they say, first impressions fucking last. In Tha Umbra are fucking pretentious twats that try to out-Opeth themselves with every song while still trying to be Kvlt with lots of occult and esoteric bullshit in their lyrics. The only thing you might not have anticipated were that they might sound good.

Fear not, they don’t. Or rather, they don’t sound as bad as say Requiem Aeternam (though few things are) but In Tha Umbra have quite a long way to go before they deserve to share the stage with… well, most bands you find an general European festival-stage. As usual when it comes to the 29 min long prog-death songs the stickler is getting the fucking parts to hold together. Opeth does it in their sleep, Dream Theater couldn’t care less about anything other than The Wank and most doom-bands are so fucking stoned they are lucky they can even pronounced the word “clock”. And then there’s the bands like In The Umbra that struggles like an Alaskan midget without snowshoes to actually make some progress from one riff to the other. Most times they do get their ass from point A to B but you can tell it wasn’t a smooth ride and those bruises on their ass make for awkward sitting down.

If I wanted to be nice I could say that they just need some time to grow and learn how that whole “composing”-thing works, if it weren’t for the fact they’ve been active for 10 years. If it sounds like this after a decade, Imagine the sonic clusterfuck of the first demo. Eww.

Sorry guys, some people were just born to tune the instruments of the real artists.

4/10.
