Following on from 2007's impressive debut, October Dawn is the second release from Portuguese progressive metal band Oblique Rain. Using the same Katatonia blended with Opeth basis that was in evidence on that debut, once again Oblique Rain have put together a splendid collection of densely intricate, heavy and involving songs, that move and evolve as you listen to them without ever falling into the trap of being technical at the expense of the music itself.


With a three guitar attack, Oblique Rain have a massive, deep rich sound that is blisteringly heavy one moment and subtle and sparse the next and with a rhythm section of Guilherme Lapa on bass and drummer Daniel Cardoso who hold everything together with sublime ease, the three guitarists are allowed the freedom to weave their magic over a rock solid base. One of the guitarists is vocalist Flavio Silva and along with the guitar attack it his vocal delivery that really lifts Oblique Rain above the ever growing prog metal pack. His layered clean vocals during "Spiral Dreams" are a perfect example of how to pack a punch both with aggression and soothing soft voices and it's an ability that Silva illustrate time and again throughout October Dawn. The tight guitar attack of Cesar Teixeira and Andre Ribiero also really comes alive on "Spiral Dreams" with some of the best punching riffs I've heard all year being interspersed between slow building clean passages.

Closing track "Darker Woods" shows the softer side of the band with clean beautiful guitars perfectly complimenting Silva's magnificent vocal and some intricate subtle bass work. Think of the style of Opeth's Damnation album, but with a richer, denser sound and you'll be very close to what Oblique Rain are capable of. The album is also impressive sound wise and it's to the band's credit that they produced the songs themselves and had Cardoso, who has subsequently departed due to other commitments, mix them.

Progressive metal may not be something that Portugal is known for, but if October Dawn gets the attention that it deserves then Oblique Rain may be about to change that and if this sort of music appeals to you then miss this release at your peril.

«2009 ainda reservava algumas edições nacionais de grande nível e «October Dawn» está, certamente, nesse lote. Se o primeiro trabalho dos Oblique Rain impressionou pela abordagem multidimensional que o grupo fez de pressupostos atmosféricos e progressivos, «October Dawn» está uns bons graus acima no barómetro da criatividade e proficiência para atingir esses fins. A magnética intro de «Soaring Alone» deixa, desde logo, antever que qualquer coisa de electrizante está para se passar nestes 46 minutos e, chegados às serenidades finais de «Darker Woods», fica confirmado que estivemos ligados à corrente. Acordados num sonho vívido. Os dois anos que passaram desde «Isohyet» deram uma maturidade acrescida aos Oblique Rain que se afere bem em temas como «Out There» e «Reminiscence», esta com solo de belo efeito, cortesia do co-produtor Pedro Mendes. A outra participação extra-banda neste trabalho cabe a Nuno Rodrigues, o vocalista dos W.A.K.O, que empresta a «Spiral Dreams» uma cólera providencial para fazer o contraponto com a subtileza etérea que o grupo tão bem sabe emanar. Nesse capítulo, «Dawn» é uma peça acústica de notável candura. Com uma das melhores produções obtidas nos estúdios UltraSound, «October Dawn» é também um álbum de superiores sonoridades, graças a mais um trabalho sem mácula de Daniel Cardoso que se estende à bateria. No entanto, o músico/produtor dá agora lugar a Marcelo Aires que acompanhará os Oblique Rain em palco. Excelentes tonalidades de (três) guitarras , um baixo audível e registos de Flávio Silva que vão do confiante contemplativo ao Chris Cornell enraivecido («Soul Circles») fazem deste um álbum com potencial internacional, onde a incontornabilidade Opeth está muito mais diluída. This is a record that needs some time to grow, but then it can easily go hand in hand with the works of Dark Suns or Novembre. The music is a bit evocative of those bands, but most obvious is Katatonia’s influence. Except for world-famous outfit Moonspell, Portuguese bands mainly operate in the underground scene. Sometimes it isn’t a matter of quality, that’s what Oblique Rain learns us. This band started in 2004 and they took the time to mature during their first years of existence. In 2007 they released their debut ‘Isohyet’, after that they worked on this sophomore album ‘October Dawn’, now released by Major Label Industries.

The Portuguese metal community is not that big, since I notice a familiar name. ‘October Dawn’ was recorded with Daniel Cardoso as drummer. Logically recordings took place in his UltraSound Studios. This guy also cooperated a lot to the Vertigo Steps album that I loved so much about a year ago. His studio seems to be pretty popular and famous in Portugal. Due to this busy studio works, he could not go on with Oblique Rain - now that they want to play live shows - and in the meantime he is replaced by Marcelo Aires. I want to emphasize that the production is top notch quality as well as Daniel’s drum skills.

The album begins with a spatial, atmospheric intro, where after ‘Out There’ eructates. This is pithy harsh metal with dynamic riffing and mellow, contemplative vocals. They evolve towards a climax with a fast and furious guitar solo in between them heavy riffs. ‘Soul Circles’, again dowsed with distorted guitars, shows a bit double vocal lines as well. Especially those vocals add a soaring zest to it. The semi-ballad ‘Absent Awry’ includes a marvellous prog-like guitar solo. I notice any Riverside and Porcupine Tree influences. ‘October Dawn’ is an album that made me spontaneously follow the lyrics. Melancholy and lost love are the main themes, but it makes ‘October Dawn’ much more accessible with the next spin. Jonas Renkse of Katatonia has had a huge influence on the vocal parts of guitarist Flavio Silva. That becomes very clear during the seven minutes long ‘Reminiscence’, a favourite track of mine which includes a beautiful guitar solo of guest musician Pedro Mendes. For some people vocals might be too snowed under by the heaviness of riffs and pounding drums (think of Dream Theater at full force in ‘Inanity’), but in ‘Spiral Dreams’ they add glorious momentum by inserting a few sturdy grunts of guest vocalist Nuno Rodrigues. Stunning! ‘Dawn’ is an introspective acoustic intermezzo (magnificent guitar sound!) and the last track ‘Darker Woods’ gives us another opportunity to wander through melancholic reveries in the vein of Anathema and Katatonia. Highly recommended for all fans of gloomy, yet dynamic metal!

Il 2009 appena trascorso ha relegato verso la propria fine un colpo di coda a dir poco straordinario per tutti gli amanti del metal di caratura elevata e più in generale per tutti gli amanti della buona musica.

Sto parlando di “October Dawn” secondo studio album dei portoghesi Oblique Rain, un suadente viaggio progressive metal nei meandri di un animo autunnale e melanconico, un animo pregno di riflessività e di classe compositiva ed esecutiva.

Ma procediamo con ordine, partendo dal qualificare con cura la proposta sonora della band. Il progressive dei portoghesi non deve far pensare ai classici stilemi portati avanti da Dream Theater né a quelli, dal piglio power e pomposo di Simphony X, quanto ad un ibrido che plasma in una dialettica compositiva di livello superiore, l’animo oscuro dei Katatonia e l’estetica di Opeth e Porcupine Tree.

L’album consta di nove tracce che sono vera e propria poesia, in un rincorrersi di metriche disegnate da quella circolarità di riffing, di cui i Tool sono espressione massima, carezzevoli introspezioni melodiche dal mood contemplativo ed estatico, ritmiche che sono apoteosi di controtempi e di precisione. Su tutto le vocals di Flávio Silva dalle tonalità calde ed ipnotiche, vere espressioni di stati di interiorità, simili per trasporto a ciò che Warrel Dane dei Nevermore riuscì a fare in un lavoro come “Dreaming Neon Black”.

L’album ripercorre quello che può essere definito “cambio interiore”, un cambio che è un passare, uno scorre di stati d’animo che trovano metaforicamente forma in un alba (intesa come rinascita) autunnale, che è insieme privazione ed autentica manifestazione del nuovo. Si va dalle notturne “Out There” e “Soul Circles” alle situazioni kafkiane di “Absent Awry”, “Reminiscence” e “Inanity”, brani che non fanno altro che preparare il terreno al capolavoro “Spiral Dreams”, brano ove vengono in primo piano echi death metal, veri e propri testimoni delle difficoltà che “il cambiamento” (essenza del disco) porta con sé. E si giunge così alla liberazione della soffusa “Dawn”, piccola parentesi acustica, prima della crepuscolare e conclusiva “Darker Woods”, celebrazione della notte e di una nuova attesa plasmata da una continuità di note e melodie fatte di pura bellezza.

Un lavoro dotato di un trasporto emotivo di livello assoluto. Profondamente affascinante ed oscuro. Una gemma.

Quando há mais do que um simples jeito para se tocar e compor, não há forma de nos equivocarmos em relação à qualidade de um trabalho. Salta-nos tudo à cara. Quase nos apetece usar a célebre frase publicitária: “o algodão não engana”, com a diferença de que aqui a pureza tem trejeitos sombrios e crepusculares. Este segundo álbum vem simplesmente comprovar o que quase ninguém tinha dúvidas: os Oblique Rain são uma das mais excitantes e promissoras bandas do actual panorama alternativo nacional.

Para os que ainda os desconhecem, para além de correrem um sério risco de ficarem “out”, estão certamente a perder uma deliciosa e viciante viagem progressiva com origens na genialidade de bandas como Katatonia, Porcupine Tree e Opeth, estando salvaguardado um exercício muito honesto de criação e não uma reles reciclagem de influências. Neste regresso a banda apresenta-se mais melancólica, até como propõe o próprio título do disco. Porém, mantêm uma “luz” encantadora e tranquilizante. Não há depressão.

Estruturalmente, “October Dawn” é muito equilibrado. Todos os temas têm momentos que os tornam memoráveis, isso graças a uma grande inteligência e perspicácia na altura de escrever estes nove temas. A humildade também pode ser um factor que nos seduz neste trabalho, sendo que havendo aqui excelentes executantes não há exageros técnicos, mesmo sem deixarem de dar um ar da sua graça. Tudo gira, sobretudo, em volta do ambiente e da melodia, alguns rasgos de peso bastante densos, e uma filosofia de composição onde tudo se desenrola no tempo certo e nas medidas exactas. As harmonias vocais aqui apresentadas são igualmente hipnotizantes e não faltarão também os leads de guitarra a colarem-se aos nossos ouvidos.

Já havia sido dito, mas fazemos questão de sublinhar: “October Dawn” é, facilmente, um dos melhores discos alguma vez editados em Portugal. [9/10] N.C.

Direttamente dal Portogallo, via Major Label Industries, è stato pubblicato il 29 Ottobre 2009 ''October Dawn'', secondo full length della Progressive Metal band Oblique Rain.
Successivo a ''Isohyet'', pubblicazione datata 2007, a distanza di soli due anni questa band propone un disco che può essere definito, senza mezzi termini e condizioni, un autentico capolavoro!
Gli Oblique Rain propongono sonorità dark, che riportano alla mente gruppi affermati come Opeth e Porcupine Tree; giganti del settore!
Tutto stimola la fantasia, in quanto si tratta di un disco da ascoltare ad occhi chiusi, che proietta l'ascoltatore in un'altra dimensione in cui suono, melodia e ritmo fanno da padroni assoluti.
Nove tracce molto audaci, dal sound duro, compatto e ben strutturato; dalle linee vocali ben costruite...
Dall'inizio alla fine, ''October Dawn'' è animato dalla costante presenza di una melodia impetuosa, di sonorità tetre (tipiche di band provenienti da paesi nordici) e ad accentuare questo fattore è la splendida voce di Flàvio Silva, cantante decisamente appropriato al genere in questione, dall'eccelsa preparazione vocale, impostata naturalmente in ''modalità progressive'' e dal timbro caldo.
Le linee vocali fanno di tutto per non estremizzare i brani, infatti non sono presenti lunghi e sovrumani acuti; il fatto è che questo gruppo si chiama fuori dagli schemi solo ed esclusivamente grazie ad un'ottima preparazione di base a livello tecnico e ai numerosi elementi innovativi nascosti.
Stile, tecnica, novità,classe... Vengono mescolate a semplicità, immediatezza e spontaneità!
Solo nove tracce per rendere questo disco calibrato e divino; in esse l'unico elemento di base che le accomuna è il decoro!
Evidenti, fin dall'inizio, gli elementi individuali del genere progressive...
''October Dawn'' si apre con ''Soaring Alone'', intro di stampo oscuro che da il via alla splendida ''Out There'', tutta di matrice Opeth, che fa pensare al gran capolavoro ''Ghost reveries''.
Da ''Soul Circles'' fino a ''Reminiscence'' il sound diventa più arduo, la voce ''graffiata'' e le chitarre accentuano riff possenti e intermezzi di brevi soli, dal suono curato e pulito; il tutto arricchito da Marcelo Aires, che alla batteria dà il meglio di sè e conferisce alla ritmica un andamento decisamente battente.
Assolutamente d'obbligo è un intervallo dedicato alle tracce numero sei e sette, rispettivamente ''Inanity'' e ''Spiral Dreams''... Le più maestose, impressionanti e di spicco del disco; le quali, senza troppi giri di parole, sono da definire esemplari! In esse tutto è anima, sistema, energia... genio.
''Dawn'' è una sorta di ballad, molto tranquilla e quieta.
In conclusione ''Darker Woods'', brano che vede la band tornare su un sound più pesante, ma che risulta comunque un brano di completamento.
Non è il caso di fare particolari appunti dato che ''October Dawn'' è un disco degno di nota, carico di dettagli caratteristici e tanta classe.
Artwork e produzione sono anch'essi ben curati e il primo, nell'insieme, dai tratti davvero dark.
Nulla da dire... Quest'album risulta come il lavoro perfetto, degno dell'ascoltatore più esigente del settore.

Confesso que não vos conheço à muito tempo, mas comprei o Isohyet e foi encantar-me do inicio ao fim.. tenho que arranjar este novo. Do que já ouvi! tá espectacular mesmo!! A Spiral Dreams tá uma "fucking masterpiece"!! Good Luck to you ma'fellow metal lovers..voces merecem! cheers..
